Excerpt

Astigmatism is a generally pervasive eye condition that prevents the retina - the light sensitive, visual canvas located at the back of your eye - from forming sharp, distinct impressions of the object(s) in sight. The defect is a direct product of apparent irregularities in the shape of the cornea, and/or the lens. Astigmatism occurs when the curvature of the eyes uppermost surface, its cornea, is flawed. A similar inconsistency existing in the lens can yield comparable blurring of vision at all distances.
