How to Improve Your Search Engine Results

Everyone wants to be on the top of the search engines. But sadly, there can only be so many spots on the first page of search results. More importantly, there is only one number one spot. How can you maximize your search engine optimization to get the results you want? How can you improve your rating? The ball is in your court, so you can help to make your results better for you and your site.

Keywords

Find keywords that your traffic will think to use. Ones that are important to them or are interesting to them. Just because you as the webmaster think that it is interesting does not mean that everyone finds it interesting. Look at the big picture and then your site can benefit from quality interesting keywords.

Use the keywords in your content, your title, as well as the meta description. But take care not to use it too much. This is called keyword stuffing and the search engines consider this to be spam. You should only have your keywords used about 6 to 10 percent if they are important terms and 3 to 5 percent for the less important terms.

URLS

Always use a search friendly URL. Use the keywords that you have chosen and make them a part of your URL. Do not use any form of dynamic URLs. Google, as well as many other of the search engines, do not care for it at all. You can often tell dynamic URLs because they will have a question mark in it.

Alt tags

Use Alt tags. An Alt tag goes under an image so the search engine can read it. Graphics are not readable but when you add an alt tag under it, the search engine understands.

Backlinks

Backlinks are great for getting you higher ratings. Why? Because if you are linked to high quality sites, Google will trust your site more. Link to sites that are relevant to yours, and only to ones that are of good quality. Do not be fast to jump on the bandwagon of paying for links though. It has been said that if Google finds out you are paying for backlinks, you will be penalized.

On the other hand, while you want to have backlinks from good sites, be careful who your site is linked to. This is not saying you can not link to other sites, just do it at a minimum. If you have too many on your page, then Google may assume that they are either paid links or do not relate to your content. Google may decide to remove you from the search engine results if you are linked to too many or they may move you to a zero page rank.

Following these tips will help you improve your search engine results. Improving your search engine results will bring you closer to the top of the list, which in turn will lead to more traffic to your site.
