How to Stop Annoying Your Visitors

Posted on January 2nd, 2012. Written by Angie.

When a visitor visits your site, the last thing you want to do is to annoy them. If you annoy them, they will leave. And chances are they will not be back. Or they may tell a friend to not visit your site because it was annoying to them. There are many things that can set your visitors off. Here we will discuss them so you know where your visitors are coming from.

Background Music

Adding music to your site may seem like a good idea. But in reality, it is not. Not everyone has the same taste of music. How would you feel if you visited a page that played heavy metal music when you can not stand heavy metal music? Most likely you would exit just as quickly as you came. Sure they can turn the sound off, but this is often a hassle for many. Music is something that is best to stay away from since everyone has a very distinct taste of it.

Pop Up Windows

Pop up windows are a big no no when it comes to your visitors. No one likes to see them, no matter if they are just getting to the site or as they leave. If they see them on the page stating did you really want to leave the page, it often frustrates them. If they clicked on the close box, then yes they did mean to leave. If they did it by accident, they will find their way back to you if they are truly interested.

New Windows

Do not make every link open up to a new window. This is very aggravating to have so many windows open. It gets to be confusing for the person. If they want a new window open, when they click on the tab, they will right click. Leave that decision to them.
And if you disable the right click, that often makes people upset. Users want to be able to use the right click so please do not disable it.

Flash

Flash sites that are completely flash are not any fun for anyone. This is a huge mistake. If it is suppose to be in a HTML format, then stick to that format. This is a huge turnoff for many of your visitors and they will not be back to visit if you keep it up.

Slow Loading Times

Slow loading times infuriate many. Your visitors are often in a hurry and do not have time to wait for your site to load. If your site takes too long to load they will go elsewhere. They should not have to wait more than 5 to 10 seconds for the page to load. If the page is loading too slowly, you need to do something to fix it so it loads faster.

Fixing these small mistakes will make your visitors much happier and they will most likely return. Your goal should be to make your visitors happy, and by fixing these mistakes that annoy them, you will succeed.
