Top Link Building Techniques

Link building is perhaps one of the most difficult and uphill tasks for SEO, but it is also one of its most crucial and critical parts. Link building is dependent on a creative approach, assertiveness and often requires allocation of a budget. Different SEOs have different approaches and styles when it comes to link building. How you go about procuring links is entirely dependent on the nature of your website and your own style. Mentioned below are the most basic types of link acquisitions:

Natural Backlinks: it is the easiest task to acquire these links, as they don’t require any special, tedious endeavor by the SEO. These links are given by other websites and pages that have found some relevance in your content and, thus, want to refer to it. All the SEO has to do is to create relevant material and advertise it.

Manual link building: this sort of link building requires extensive efforts on behalf of the SEO. The SEO comes up with a compelling and concise email which is sent to bloggers, directories and even has to pay for listings. The email elucidates why the link would be mutually beneficial for everyone involved. An example of one of the benefits could be convincing the city council to link back to your site as it would promote foreign investments and entrepreneurship.

Self created link building: there are numerous websites that readily provide link backs to any visitor through various means, such as guest book signing etc. Although these link backs rank lowest on the link building hierarchy, they can still pack a punch. However, nowadays the modern search algorithms used by search engines classify these backlinks as spam and often impose restrictions on sites that have plenty of them. This option should be pursued with extreme caution as it can be quite counterproductive.

Building links for your website or blog is the cornerstone of SEO practices. But for initiating a link building endeavor, a person should be cognizant of how search engines perceive the elements of a link and how critically those links are weighed in the search algorithms. It is still unclear how search engines judge and weigh backlinks, but analysis and testing allows for educated assumptions. Some of which are:

Reputation of a site: it is a well-known fact that sites that are immensely popular have a great backlink value. A site like CNN.com or BBCworld.com has numerous websites of different nature linked to them which gives credence to their importance and reputation. To win over the search engine, you’d have to get link partners, like these sites, which already enjoy tremendous success and ranking.

Relevancy: every website has a theme and a subject. If your website gets backlinks from other websites, which have similar theme and subject, then these links really matter. For example, a website containing health related articles and tips getting a backlink from a site which promotes body building would carry a lot of weight. On the other hand, getting irrelevant links, for instance, from a site that sells stationary, carries less weight and importance.

Anchor Text: one of the most crucial factors that search engines take into consideration is the anchor text. Multiple pages, all referring to a page containing relevant and right keywords, would probably make this page rank high for a cleverly embedded phrase in the anchor text.

Trustworthiness: everyone knows that internet is cluttered with millions of websites which do nothing, but spew spam. Statistics reveal that at least 45% of the existing websites on the internet are guilty of spamming. In order to eliminate spam, search engines utilize complex algorithms which measure a website’s trustworthiness. These algorithms rely on link graphs. Having links from trusted and verified domains leaves a positive link graph. Example of a few websites with high trust domains are government websites, educations sites etc.

Link Farms: spam linking is like a chain of spam. Websites referring to spam links might be spamming themselves and be connected to various other sites of similar nature. Search engines draw a comparison based on the numbers of such websites.  So, be careful and do not try to procure links from fraudulent websites and do not link back to them.

Striving for fresh links: the job of SEO requires constant vigilance. SEO can’t rest easy until it has garnered a certain number of backlinks. Link building is a constant cycle and should focus on getting fresh links for your website or blog.
