It could be the Google Honeymoon Period is over now. Did you do any link building en mass?

Did you be too aggressive building the backlinks?. if yes is possible google dance. or
If you using wordpress. is possible new fresh post will appear in top 10, even no backlinks. depend on keyword competition. but will drop after that.

"brand new site" sounds more like Honeymoon Period ended rather than Google dance.

Yeah this happens to my wordpress sites when i build them. I was ranking number 2 suddenly for a very good keyword and then it just dissapears! Honeymoon period is over and you now need to concentrate on building quality backlinks and content for the site!
