The War for Stella’s Love
The battle between Blanche DuBois and Stanley Kowalski in Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire is a physical and mental battle. As Blanche and Stanley clash throughout the play, we can see that the phrase opposites attract is a false statement. Blanche DuBois is a typical southern belle who is lonely and trying to overcome hardships. She is an insecure woman who had many lovers because she needed to feel desired. While Blanche tries to overcome her hardships her reality is being destroyed left and right and the only person left that can bring her happiness is her sister Stella. Stanley Kowalski is a sadistic simple-minded person. Stanley is constantly cruel to Blanche, but he does show appreciation to his friends and wife. They’re two reasons why Blanche and Stanley are in a constant battle with one another.
