Does Google know the difference between duplicate content and quoted content?

We know that the Google duplicate content penalty (Panda) only applies for content that is being used on the same site but at a different location. Not when it's used on one site copied from another. In that case you just wont rank as high for it as the original. But sometimes in a discussion, you want to quote what someone has said so that you can form a reply around it so they know what you're talking about or points you're referring to.

And sometimes, such as in forums more, some people quote whole replies or even the original post and just say "Thanks" or something. And this can happen many times. So that thread/url ends up with tons of duplicated content that's repeated over and over again.

So the question is, does Google know that this is quoted content due to the use of the html blockquote element?

Does the blockquote element work the same the iframe element that links to the original source of content work in a similar way? So that Google knows where that content is from and isn't attributing it as duplicated content?

If you look at the source code of a quoted post from the forum here for example. It uses attribution type class and links to the original source of that content. Much like how the canonical URL works.

And the official HTML5 blockquote links directly to the source with a citation
Does Google know the difference between duplicate content and quoted content?
Should all quoted text use a citation link or is that the same as as the blockquote element? Should all copied text that's duplicated on the same page be quoted using blockquote element or equivalent or would that be seen as duplicate content?

What do you think?

Thanks!

I couldn't find a concrete answer by just using the blockquote, but I would assume Google knows of it. I did find citation on Schema.org which is part of the ForumPosting under creative work/article. If you have schema enabled, you may want to consider using that just for clarity to search engines.

This is an interesting post, considering that we are all aware how important it is to avoid copying and pasting content from other sites. The reality is that at times you cannot rewrite something and it makes more sense to just copy it. Does that count as duplicate content, considering that you sort of had to do it because there was not a feasible way to go about it? I think that Google is quite lenient if the percentage of the content that you have copied is small compared to the rest of the content on that page. So basically I think that as long as you make sure you cite the original source and put it in inverted commas to show that you copied it intentionally, it should not be a problem.

It depends on how much you are quoting. If you use one of two lines and use quotation marks, then Google will not catch the quotation as a duplicate content. However, if you are using 50 words for your quotation and have not used quotation marks, your quote will be termed duplicate. The best way to get rid of this problem is create a graphic using quotation and publish it as an image.

I know many sites who are getting some sort of less preference if they use the content from others. Unless the site is classified as news or so. I don't think quote is properly understood by them. I have seen some sites making use of the quote from say religious stuff. And that never worked out for them. And instead they have lost the traffic. Quoted content is harder to track to the original sources. And this makes it even more harder for the google to index the difference.

I guess it is easy for search engines to determine if part of the content is quoted or not which means a duplicate content has no quotation marks as delimiters. It is a big mistake if Google wouldn’t have the capability to know that difference because it is critical to the algorithm and will certainly affect the SEO of the site. Maybe Google crawlers are armed with a test for that issue.
