How long does it take a forum community to fall apart?

I'm lucky to have obtained my forum before the community fell apart. However, some other forums take that slow slide down hill over months and years and end up being dead. About how long would it take for a forum community to fall apart and what are some tips to keep the community active?

It might only take a few months for a forum to completely become inactive, depending on the dynamic of your members. For instance, some members might only show up and post when others they like are around. If the most active/popular members quit suddenly, the forum could decline in activity a lot sooner.

You will notice how a forum community falls apart very fast if you are only relying on a few good people to post on the forum. You need a few dozen members to keep the forum active.

A forum will never die or stop being active so long as the owner continues to care for the community. Once the forum owner has stopped caring, the forum has no chance of surviving.

I am amused with this thread. Why expect a forum to fall apart? When you start a forum, the intention is for the forum to grow in members and in activity. Now, I wonder how it will fall apart if you are continuous with the regular marketing campaign and posting of new threads to energize the boards? But if it is an experiment, I’d say you forum will fall apart in one month when you quit on it. Just don’t do anything, no posting, no moderating and hopefully, the community will get tired and quit.
