Would you consider a directory to be a link farm?

Most link directories aren't very targeted and have no specific niche. Thus the backlink you get back from the site will have very little value. Do you think that Google sees these type of backlinks, from directories as spam links? After all, the directory is just a big link farm. What do you think?

Just depends on which directory. And, also how many other links are on the same page as yours. For instance, if you are given a dedicated page for your listing, with just your link, then it might be worthwhile. However, if your link is on the same page listing as 100 other outbound links, that backlink is spammy and will be worthless.

Another thing to consider is that many directories require a reciprocal link for your 'free listing'. That means you are linking back to them in exchange. And, Google frowns on excessive reciprocal links, especially to unrelated websites.

I think it takes time for the link can be effective, what time and I also hope Google do not let people down on their way

Have you gotten backlinks in link directories or link farms since Penguin update came out?

It depends on the directory, specifically on criteria of accepted links and how focused it is (niche wise). I think it is good to have a few links from quality directories for the sake of a richer link type portfolio.

It would be nice to get a backlink from a directory that gives you a dedicated page of your own, where you can customize the description so that it reflects a similar content as your own site. For instance, if your site is about board games, you don't just want a listing on a page about games, as that is too all encompassing. A single page dedicated to 'board games', specifically content from your site, will look like more of a relevant, quality backlink.

directories are not link farm sites these have been categorized under relevant topics. so links generally would not be spammed while should choose reputed directory to get good back links.

I was just thinking it would be nice if they would dedicate an entire page to your listing, not just a short paragraph. That would provide infinitely better results in search engines as you could go into detail explaining more about your site than with a short summary.
