Same as always, no matter which Penguin comes out.
  • Post great and unique content. You can even use spun content, you just need to spin it properly on manual and sentence level (no software can do that)
  • Keyword (anchor) diversity
  • Make link building to look natural

Ask yourself 2 questions:
  • Do I deserve high rankings for my desired keywords
  • If I was an employee at Google, could I easily know I use crappy links to rank my website?

Web 2.0 links for instance... Very quality links. But if you only link from them to your website, you are on Google's radar. "Unselfish" link building is the future.

I personally found that writing articles is the best way to build links. If you want more information just let me know.

If your article is full of useful information it could be a good thing as you are helping others and answering questions they might have.

With unselfish link building, are you linking to other sites? I'd want to find out more about how this works.

Google easily targets many link building techniques nowadays. If anchor diversity became really important with one of the first Penguin updates, why wouldn't URL diversity be important? Let's say you build 30 web2's and you link to your site from them. You use 2 links on every article and every article links to your site. Google knows what you're doing in a heart beat and will know it even faster, more accurate and punish it harder in the future.

Let's say you are doing SEO for your site that sells cookies. You write articles about cookies and insert links to them that point to your site that is about cookies. Very easy to see the pattern, especially when 30+ web2's are pointing to your site only.

What if you wrote an article about food more in general: cookies, chocolate, candies and lollipops? You would find other websites from other niches that are not competitive with you and link to them as well. If an article has backlinks to many different sites from different owners, Google will have much harder time to target your link building technique. Also, you could use links to very high authority websites that aren't competitive to you like Wikipedia etc. Of course less link juice would be transferred to your site and you'd have to do much more work, but it would be safe.

Still a theory though, I'm not implementing it just yet, but probably will in the future.

I guess there has no change in the way of building links because you are practically doing the promotion and the site you choose is your decision. Based on the discussions that I had read, high quality backlinks are those that are posted on high quality sites which are popular and have many readers or visitors. When you post your backlink on an obscure site then your effort is wasted.
