If you are using Facebook for business, you might want to fill your Facebook friend list with people who share similar interests as your page or site. Then, you would invite your friends from Facebook to like your page. This will lead to more traffic to your actual (off Facebook) site.

Agree. Responding to the question, how many do you need? I NEED as many as Facebook will let me have. I forget what the amount is but after reach a certain number in your network, if you want more it's no longer considered “personal”, it's business. If it's business you gotta start paying. All the social media networks have limits on followers. Although I use FB for home biz purposes, if I get a few thousand in my network, I'm happy.

It is actually depends on the intention of the user. Some people use facebook to be connected with their friends and family. So they don't add people who they don't know. Again when someone use facebook for business purpose or for let people know about his visions for a specific topic he or she try to add all the people either he knows them or not. Doing this he or she can reach to lots of people and share his/her things.

That's a good policy, not to add people you don't really know. Even friends of friends are not really 'friends' as they could just be random people your friend added to his or her friend list. So you might not even have anything in common with that person, unless you know them in real life. Also, there are security issues when adding strangers to your Facebook friend list. Just best to stick to people you know in real life.

I tried that when I first started on Facebook: one account for personal and one for business. But I deleted the personal account. For one thing, I kept confusing myself. (O.o) For another thing, it was just too much extra work! Besides that, I don't really need Facebook to communicate with my friends and family. Some people may have a distance they need to bridge. But most of the people in my family and friends circle I have no problem reaching them directly, without social media.

I don't. I look at their profile and decide if they would be a good match for me or not to add as a friend.

You can only have 5000 friends on facebook. If you want ton have more than 5000 friends, you will have an option to convert your personal facebook account to facebook page.
How many friends do you need depends on what do you do on facebook. If you are into marketing and selling, you need a big followers, however, if you are using facebook as medium to interact with friends and family all you need is your friends and family wich may be less than 500.

On a rough estimate, I have 50 colleagues and the same number of relatives connected to my Facebook account. Add to that the assortment of friends plus new friends, those people I still have to meet, the total will reach 500. I’d say that figure is just enough for me since it is not easy to interact to all the posts on my timeline. Besides, I am not into business right now and my Facebook account is only for personal use. But if I would use my Facebook account for business then I probably need to add more friends.

The more the merrier if it's for business because the more friends you have the more influence you'll have, your friends and even their friends could see your posts. You can also add your friends to your group and ask them to like your page.

I like your idea that the more friends, the merrier. However, did it occur to you that you cannot have the capability and capacity to react to the post of your friends if you have 5,000 of them? It will just be numbers because the most you can muster is to react to about a hundred of a few hundred of the posts every day but definitely not a thousand. In other words, those 5,000 friends are not really friends at all but just connections.

For me it doesnt really matter how many friend i have, once they are all people of value.

Theres a thing I usually do whenever I get a friend request, I ensure I visit the individual's timeline and see the kind of things he/she is putting out there, and i weight them based on whether they can be of value to me or not. And, insofar as they are people of value, there's no way i won't accept such requests, no matter how many times they come. The only exception to this is people I know
