Silence of the Lambs! By far, my favorite horror/suspense movie so far. So many stars in that movie and just a good story line too, maybe because it was based off a book.

The Shining is the scariest movie of all time! That scene with the little girls in the hall gives me creeps everytime. Really big fan of old movies, by the way.

I love supernatural horror movies, more than slasher types. And, I've seen The Shining at least a dozen times. I like the supernatural/undead aspects of that movie.

Have you seen The Fourth Kind? It is AWESOME!!! Another one was The Mothman Prophecies (Richard Gere); it's inspired by true events. The Exorcism Of Emily Rose was a great movie too, as it was also based on true events. The Conjuring was wickedly spectacular, and based on true events...lol

I LOVE movies inspired by a true story! Any suggestions for a great movie to watch? @Asmodeus and I are going to go see Deliver Us From Evil tomorrow night Favourite Suspense, Thriller, Horror Movie

omg! Yes, Mothman Prophecies! I have seen this at least five times. And, I love it. Some of my favorite people are in that movie I love any movie that has supernatural horror that is based on real events. For me, the horror always feels more real especially when I know that real people went through these events (or something similar). There is a ring of truth about it. Let me know how your movie goes, what you think of it. Favourite Suspense, Thriller, Horror Movie

The original author of Mothman Prophecies book, published in the 1970's is also the one that coined the phrase, "men in black" I found that out when researching him on Amazon Favourite Suspense, Thriller, Horror Movie

You need to see "The Strangers" if you haven't already. It's a horror, based on a true story. MUST SEE MOVIE!!!

I learn something new everyday. I didn't know this. I'd love to be able to read that book. I think it would be interesting, as books get into the detail that movies miss.

Good ol' Michael Myers. Of course the originals, NOT the remake, as I absolutely HATED the remake. I loved all the Halloween movies, they were truly EPIC in the day.

And, yes... Awesome observation... He did just walk... Funny how that is...LOL

Jamie Lee Curtis! Awesome, then and now. Favourite Suspense, Thriller, Horror Movie

Such a talent. And, funny to think that's one of the movies that got her started.

She was FANTASTIC in True Lies too. Very sexy and sassy, as she brought out her vivacious inner vixen! She was pretty hot in Freaky Friday too; didn't care too much for the movie itself (not any fault to Jamie Lee though). She's got it goin' on, so they say!

Was Silence of the Lambs based on real life events? It has that authentic feel that creeps me out whenever I watch it. One of my favorite horror/suspense movies though. Still even today, it's so well made by comparison to more modern movies.

No, it wasn't based on true events. Hannibal Lecter was created by researching behaviors of other serial killers. The novel was written in 1988, and the movie was made in 1991.

One of my interests which fascinates me to no end is serial killers. The psychology, the behavior, the research that has gone into such a nightmarish thing is intriguing. I have numerous books and dvd sets surrounding this very thing. Watching the documentaries on a few of the below mentioned, had made me sick; particularly Albert.

Albert Fish was one of the first known cannibals. I had heard of him as the Brooklyn Vampire but there are a couple of names for him. What he had done was incomprehensible and sickening.

Andrei Chikatilo was Russian and I heard of him as the "Red Ripper". He had confessed to 56 murders, being women and children.

Another serial killer was Ed Gein. Known for being a body snatcher, he would exhume bodies from their graves to have their trophies.

For some reason my margins are off and I can't fix them...lol Oh well, moving on...

Jeffery Dahmer, to my knowledge is the last known cannibal (correct me if I'm wrong). He's a serial killer and sex offender. 17 men and boys were murdered.

When you read about each one, and how their behavior was at the time, compared with their behavior while inside , it's astonishing how Anthony Hopkins was able to pull off such a character. Absolutely amazing, however scarily transforming. He is an actor who takes his role very seriously, and goes over his scenes, literally hundreds of times, until he gets it the way he wants it.

Brilliant and terrifying was his goal, and he succeeded. Favourite Suspense, Thriller, Horror Movie

I liked the Purge. It was supspenful and just a good movie, although I could never fathom something like that happening.

Thank you so much for this! You have such amazing detail here and I appreciate the time you put into this list.

Of course, Anthony Hopkins is sheer brilliance, a master of his craft. Even now, I can watch those Hannibal Lecter movies and get chills. He's really that good, creating a convincing 'real' killer. He makes the viewer root for him. And, anything based off real life, such as this character was, is going to be more horrifying than just something imagined, even if just a compilation of events or characters.

The Red Ripper caught my attention, seeming to be instantly familiar and then I realized that I had seen the movie Citizen X which was based on books about these murders. The movie is amazing, just top notch actors involved, everyone in there made it a labor of love. And, I think it was done by such talent as an ode to all those innocents who were lost to this monster. Part of the issue there was just denial, 'oh no! we don't have serial killers here!'. So of course, they did not do much to catch this man for many years and he was allowed to continue killing. Also lack of good forensics was another issue.

The things he did was just unthinkable.

These real life monsters create more horror than anything a writer could ever dream up. Maybe that's why they make for good movies, when watching part of you says, 'hey! this is real!' and yeah that makes it more horrifying because you know not only could this kind of thing happen in real life, but it already has.

You're welcome. Anytime!

I know this isn't a thread for serial killers, however I can't help to bring this person up since we are on this topic... This particular individual was the most horrid I have ever learned about. If they ever made up a movie about him, I would be the first person there to bear witness to such an atrocity. I have the book Devil In The White City, however I haven't had chance to read it yet.

Dr. HH Holmes was the most terrifying, sadistic killer of all time. He had built a hotel specifically to adhere to his inhumane and grotesque acts. He had confessed to only 27 of the suspected 200+ murders, that was found in the bowels of the monstrous realm of torment.

He had worked as a pharmacy in 1886 and took over the business in 1888 and began to reconstruct around it, making it an astonishing 3 story torture chamber... Well... That's what I call it anyway. It was deemed as the "Murder Castle" once he was convicted of his crimes.

The previous owner went "missing" and was never seen after the business had changed hands, and after the hotel had its grand opening in 1893, more unfortunate souls disappeared in the depths of his wrath. Many tourists and locals would no longer be seen after stepping inside the building, as he literally had torture chambers, gas chambers, hidden rooms with in rooms. The whole place was a maze, and he was waiting for them to become lost while trying to find a way out.

I think the most horrifying aspect of this case was... He would strip them down to the bone (keeping the bone), and incinerate the tissue of most of his victims in the basement; the rest he had buried in a separate, but close by area in the basement.

As if the above wasn't bad enough; HH Holmes would clean and scrub all of the bones, then sell them to educational faculties, and institutions!!

There isn't very many websites online that have good floor plans of the castle, however I did find a couple of them. This one seems to be the better out them all, but if you happen to find other ones, feel free to let me know.

EDIT: There's apparently a movie in the works. However I haven't seen it advertised....

I forgot to mention, there's controversy about whether or not if he was in fact, Jack The Ripper... Possible? There's a book called Bloodstains by Jeff Mudgett, suggesting this...

I would have to say that I don't watch these movies that much. I am a thinker and then think that every little sound I hear is something it is not lol.

I just really find this topic fascinating, that's all...lol

Back on topic though, @Asmodeus and I visited the Drive-In, and we seen the movie Lucy and The Purge Anarchy. I thoroughly enjoyed both of these movies. They had kept us both entertained through the whole thing.

Lucy was an AWESOME philosophical movie which brings forth the proposition of knowledge, and opening up your mind to everything and everyone around you. Logic and relevance (though there's definitely a sci-fi aspect to it) to time and space with in a lifespan and passing the knowledge on to promote growth and awareness.

Time is what holds the key to life. Knowledge is what keeps timing in place, as time waits for no one however knowledge is what brings our existence together, as with out it, we cease to exist.

Oh god, now I'm babbling... Moving on.

Purge Anarchy was wayyy better than the first one, of course I find this angle of thinking rather interesting because... Hypothetically speaking, if such a night was to come about (to be able to commit any crime and get away with it-this would include murdering someone); most people would be getting the hell outta dodge or at least I would anyway, but my question is... If someone is going to kill someone else in the heat of the moment (which most murders happen this way), then how would this assist the economy or the crime rate? Passion killings or anything related around that aspect, wouldn't wait until a certain night for it to be considered "Ok".

Perhaps I'm wrong on my thinking, but if I'm raged up enough to actually kill someone... Am I going to stop in the middle of things, and think about when it going to be legal? Not that I would kill someone, but just hypothetically speaking...

Thoughts?

I loved The Shining as well, but The Exorcist remains my favorite from all times. This film will go down in history as probably one of the most disturbing and criticized films because of its content. If you are religious you may not want to watch this.

Three movies are already on your list: The Shining, The Exorcist and Silence Of The Lambs. Only I don't count Silence Of The Lambs as a horror film. Horror is not really my thing.

I liked The Shining because the ending was an ending that I would approve.
(Don't want to spoil it, in case others have not seen it.)

The Exorcist is on my list because I'm never going to forget that green vomit.

But the Silence Of The Lambs scores points for the chemistry between Hannibal and Clarice. If he wasn't a psycho serial killer, they could have been a good crime-solving team.

Maybe now, but while growing up, I don't enjoy watching horror movies for it always makes me have sleepless nights and all that. I would have to check the movies on the list that you dropped anyway.
