    So I've been using YouTube for years, but mainly more on the promotion side of it rather than uploading my own and other peoples videos before. I've upped other videos before no problem but today was the first time my video was flagged by YouTube for violating the community guidelines apparently. They didn't specifically state what it was but I think that it might have been that I had put too many links in the description area. I had my main site link at the top above the fold, then I had about 1000 words broken into about 4 different parts with a Goo.gl shortened link at the end of each section. So in total it had 5 links in the description. But a good lot of content too. I got a bit too zealous! How not to upload a video to YouTube - Lessons to Learn

    You see this in other videos, and that includes videos of a commercial nature where they have many links in the description area. That includes their main site link and several shortened links as well as links to their social media pages, Twitter, FB and others.

    So I can't really understand in full why the video was flagged and and subsequently removed. I can only assume that it was because it literally had too many links in it but again, there are many commercial videos on YouTube that have a lot of links in them.

    I assume that was the reason. I did appeal the decision but I've just gone ahead and completely deleted the video now. I'll try to upload it to YT again on a later date and make sure to only include my one site link at the top and perhaps a social media link at the bottom as that doesn't seem to be too bad and is fair to do right? Well at least that's my thinking on the matter!

    That said, I've hopefully learned a valuable lesson and it isn't something that will happen again. One thing that's stood out is their message that the video was probably designed to take people away from YouTube more than it was a video that would be entertaining to watch. So that's my next port of call and I'll try again with another video that is more entertaining but still have that affiliate marketing feel to it and not put too many links in it!     I think you touched on another area that needs to be addressed. Nowadays ,if you try and make money without paying using one of the big social media platforms then this is something they don't like. They will do a lot to slow your progress down. They can make it super difficult for you by banning accounts, shutting down accounts, shadowing accounts or even suspending accounts. The days of free advertising are over with most large social media sites because they want to monetize their platform, which means you have to pay. They are becoming more and more restrictive with this. However, new options and opportunities are in the pipeline that totally disrupt their profit models.     shutting down accounts, shadowing accounts or even suspending accounts

    That's very true as i could see from my previous experiences on social networks, so sometime i was asking my self "how social they are" How not to upload a video to YouTube - Lessons to Learn OK they are but for simple users who are members just for fun, but for serious user who want to earn trough that fun, they are looking for their cut of your success, or else ...

    Oh wow Mike, that really sucks and I am sure it is upsetting for you!

    No I haven't had an experience like that. I have put maybe maximum 3 links in my Youtube videos?

    I have had to remove a video from Youtube because I did a video on SmashFund exposing their scam and I showed the members area. Yes I know the terms and conditions for SmashFund had something about that, yeah sure....

    Anyway SmashFund lodged a copyright complaint and I got a letter from Youtube saying that I had 48 hours to review the video and either remove it or lodge a dispute. I did the wise thing. I removed it from Youtube, but not without being very cheeky.

    I first made a new video about SmashFund that did not violate any copyright stuff, and in that new video I put a link to the old video saying watch it quick before it goes down hahaha. I shared the **** out of that video.

    Then I uploaded the original video onto Vimeo... and embedded that onto my website ... and then I deleted my Youtube video.

    I updated my website review and added in a copy of the letter from Youtube stating I had to remove it.

    Anyway my video stayed on Vimeo for over 3 weeks before it was removed and I got a letter from Vimeo too saying they received a complaint.

    Yes I know I am quite a cheeky one.

    i have never experienced any thing like that to be honest i know that can be trouble some , it just sounds like a whole lot of stress to deal with honestly it sucks that there are limits to what you can do , it is one of those situations were if you only knew a little bit about it you would of avoided every thing , this is a great post though i feel as if i learned a lot about the do's and dont's of posting a video on you tube , with that being said thank you for sharing

    Hi, I believe affiliate links can actually effect the video's SEO, in the old days it would often reject videos with affiliate links for monetization, so out of habit, I do not add links to description. I believe Youtube's Guidelines have changed quite a lot over the years as well as their algorithms. I upload mainly public domain, and it is no longer really profitable, I believe because youtube flags it as being non-original content. If I make my own video it gets very high CPM and earnings. It has been a learning experience especially when companies try to take control of content that is in the public domain. A few times, I have received false cease and desist letters and sent through counter claims and won, because I knew I could prove it was public domain material in a court of law and stood by my guns. Don't let these big companies push you around because when push comes to shove they are in it for the money and won't go through a real court because of costs involved. It is also illegal to make false claims or to claim public domain content as your own. I had to fight about 20 companies and claims over 6 months to upload Night of the Living Dead movie which is classic public domain. Youtube removed the monetization for some reason, so while still being uploaded it is unable to be monetized for whatever reason.

    I monetize a lot of public domain, yes night of living dead is in public domain I am 100% ysure ou can create your own dvd covers and sell it if you wanted.

    YouTube have updated the rules and regulations guiding their community, so it might be that you broke of few of those rules. No need to panic over them.

    I know that users don’t read the rules of the website particularly public websites like Youtube and social media. We just create an account and go on with the uploading. And once we commit a violation that our account is suspended, that’s the only time that we get to know the specific rules pertaining to our violation. But that is normal for users not to read the rules so I guess we just have to be careful in what kind of video we are making for uploading to Youtube. When we are not sure then check with the rules first before the actual uploading.
