Working from home as an online marketer isn't always great

When it comes to working from home, you're usually going to think of online marketing.  Well working from home as an online marketer isn't always the easiest thing to do because there are a lot of things you have to focus on as well as not get distracted.  Having a home office is a great way to help you work, but it's not always the greatest thing because you can still get easily distracted.

Don't get me wrong, I have a home office and I use it a lot, but I usually catch myself sitting at my kitchen table doing the majority of my work because I just like the table more lol.  I have a nice desk and lamp in the corner of my basement that just collects dust because I like to be upstairs with my family as I work, which could be a huge distraction at times but I think that's the only good distraction Working from home as an online marketer isn

Working from home as an online marketer isn't always great because of a few things, and that's what I'll be talking about in this discussion Working from home as an online marketer isn

Distractions:
When it comes to working from home, not just as an online marketer, you will have a massive amount of distractions to worry about.  Like I mentioned above, I have the distraction of family but that's a good one to have Working from home as an online marketer isn

Most people, when working from home, will easily get distracted by their phones or TV in the background.  Their phones will notify them of a call or text and the person will then get pulled into whatever other notifications there are on the phone.  I myself have a problem with this because I get a ton of emails each day and I want to read some of them.  I then get pulled down the rabbits hole and don't realize how long I've not been working, which is never good.  The TV on in the background is also a super big distraction because you will only hear snippets of audio that will catch your attention and you will turn to watch.  I've caught myself watching an entire episode of Jimmy Falon on the Tonight Show because I heard a him mention a guest he was having.

To fix this, I turn my phone on silent and keep my TV turned off until I'm on my lunch break or done with work lol.

Lunch Breaks:
When I work from home I like to take a 1 hour lunch break.  Most businesses allow a 30 to 60 minute break, so me taking 1 hour isn't that bad.  The bad part about this is that I will take an hour long break and eat a huge lunch then get tired.  I'll want to take an afternoon nap because of how full I am, and since I'm at home already, I have a nice big bed to go lay down in for 30 minutes.

Now to most people, a 30 minute nap is ok since you're working form home.  You can just work an extra 30 minutes at the end of the day to make up for it.  When I take a nap at home I usually smack my alarm clock and sleep for at least 2 hours, which kills my productivity and also keeps me awake all night long because I'm not tired lol.

Boredom:
Working from home can bore the life out of you.  You can be working for 8 hours staring at the same screen or 4 walls around you and this will drain you.  There have been plenty of times that I was working and I didn't realize how bored I was and started to go on reddit or Facebook to take a 5 minute break in order to break my boredom lol.

Boredom and Online Marketing go hand in hand if you're working from home because you will usually be the only one home if everyone else is away at work.  You will not have anyone to talk to or mingle with like how most people have the option of doing in an office setting.  You'll need to avoid the boredom, but I can't tell you how to do that exactly since everyone has different interests and it's difficult to tell you what to do to stay on task and keep your attention Working from home as an online marketer isn

Losing Track of Time:
When you're working as an online marketer from home you will likely lose track of time even if there is a clock in front of you.  There have been plenty of times that I've been working for 8 hours in a row and forgot to eat, call someone, go somewhere, etc.  I've missed my fair share of appointments due to losing track of time lol.

The fix to this is pretty simple, you just need to set alarms on your phone and add titles to each alarm that goes off.  You will need to drop what you're doing when the alarm goes off because if you snooze it, you'll likely keep doing so and not remember to attend to whatever it was.

Working Odd Hours:
I work some pretty odd hours as a full time online marketer.  I'll work during the day and at night, which is basically 2nd and 3rd shift.  Now this is a normal thing for a lot of jobs because there's 1st, 2nd and 3rd shift which basically is morning, noon and night shifts.  If I were to always work during the 2nd and 3rd shift I'd be ok with that, but since I work from home and more people live here, I can't always work when I want to.  There have been times that I've worked from 9am to 2pm and then from 10pm to 4am.  My hours are all over the place and that's something a lot of online marketers have in common Working from home as an online marketer isn

In Conclusion:
Working online as an online marketer isn't always the greatest thing, but it's what we love doing and wouldn't trade it for the world Working from home as an online marketer isn  Even if a full time marketer does read this discussion they won't get turned off because they are already living what I mentioned haha Working from home as an online marketer isn

Then only take a 30 minute lunch, that is enough. Yes, I get a 30 minute lunch working at a grocery store.

I think this is exactly right. The first thing I honed in on after reading your initial post was the problem with the odd hours, Working from home makes me into a bit of a vampire, I must admit. I sleep whenever and wake whenever, and so I have a pretty strange pattern in terms of my everyday life. Boredom is also a problem. The lack of social interaction can take its toll on all of us. The distractions are terrible as well, and being able to just surf online while we should be working and staying focused is a huge issue, of course.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
It's a huge issue and I have to admit that some of these freelancers that work from home don't feel that need to do so. One thing is understanding what works better for us at the end.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
@Brida You are absolutely right on this note, every freelancer at the end would have to choose working in such ways that suits him or her without being an added stress.

Some people actually have sleeping disorder and it has a way of influencing their working as a freelancer. Sometimes, they tend to sleep when it's important and be awake when it's not needed for them to be.

I have had this experience once and I can tell you that it's not funny experience but I'm glad with therapy I'm now back to normal.

Yes, working from home in any capacity, although better than an office or other location is not everything it is cracked up to be. It can be isolating and it is also distracting at times. It takes a lot of initiave to stick to it all the time all day long. At least it does for me.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
Are you saying working from the office makes one feel isolated? I doubt because if I'm careful about the way I work and try to make things work fine, I don't see the reason I shouldn't succeed working from office rather.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DarthHazard
I think you may have read it the wrong way Barida. I believe the kgord meant that working from home can be quite "isolating and it is also distracting at times". She didn't mean that the office was isolating Working from home as an online marketer isn

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
Haha Mr Barida, you misread @Kgord comments. I believe it's home work disposition that was being referred to here. Offices are strictly for work, although there might be little distraction but certainly it cannot be compared to what is obtainable working at home.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Distractions are such a huge thing and it can actually have a huge effect on your work as an online marketer. Even if you are by yourself in your house, there are a lot of other things that can distract you quite easily when you work from home. And it's not easy to try and avoid them as well which is why sometimes it's always best to try and work away from home to ensure that you avoid all the distractions.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
It's simply not easy to avoid distractions when working from home is involved. I always have special respect for those freelancers that succeed while working from home.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I agree so much with you here. Being my own supervisor is a bit tough. I guess I could always be better at time management, but working from home comes with so many temptations and distractions. Just hanging out with my pets, for example, can be a detriment on my productivity. I have to really apply a lot of discipline upon myself to stay motivated and productive at home. It is possible, but it is a bit tougher than a more structured corporate environment where other managers are supervising you.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
Distractions is not a good thing when work is concerned. It has a way of making a mockery of ones job if you aren't careful. It's always advised to manage such distraction in such a way it wouldn't have a bad influence in one's work.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
I do have to work on keeping my distractions to a minimum. Today is a perfect example of how I got thrown a bit off track. I got home from school/work and started hanging with my roommate. The next thing I knew, it was 4pm, and I am losing money and missing deadlines as I type this. Obviously, keeping our distractions to a minimum and wisely managing our limited time is key to our levels of success.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
Haha, that normally happens especially if you get along very well with your roommate. There are times when you won't realize how much time you have used up chatting and discussing. I have experienced couple of times so I understand exactly what you meant.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
I agree with you on most of the points. Actually, it's going to take some great art of discipline to succeed as a freelancer that works from home. That's the reason some of us would feel better working at an office instead of staying at home.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
Discipline is good no matter how you look at it or even from the angle you are applying it to because in the end it simply makes you to bring the best out of yourself or anything you are doing. If you lack discipline as a freelancer, definitely you will be losing money and clients on daily basis.

I can associate myself with all of these facts about working from home. Since I am at home all day long, people tend to believe that I am free and can attend them any time. This is a great distraction. Working at odd time is also very common for me. I am based in Asia and my clients are in the US, I have to wake up in the middle of the might to catch up with my client. Boredom is another great problem.

How do you handle health working from home? I mean I have seen some of the freelancers gaining weight. And also have other issues like change in sleep pattern. And it has affected their health in many ways. You can see that it would be something worth thinking about. That being said, working from home does not always sound good from the way I am seeing it. How is your experience?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

vinaya
I don't snack when I am working. I also work in my garden every afternoon. Therefore, weight gain has not been my problem. As long as I get at least 6 hours sleep in 24 hours, I will be fine, I don't have any problems with a change in sleep pattern.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
I would tell you that does freelancers that having eating disorders are probably the type that doesn't mind what they eat just simply because they are working at home. I have actually seen some that gained so much weight that it became worrying to me.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

vinaya
Weight gain can be a problem even when you have a regular job that involves sitting on your desk all the time. Eating disorder is not endemic to the freelancers only.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
It really is a common misconception which people have that, when you tell them you are working from home, they seem like they think you are just living a life of luxury and just hanging out not doing anything all day. In many ways, being consistent as a freelancer is one of the toughest jobs I have EVER had, and I really have to be strict at being my own boss. I rarely EVER finish everything that I wanted to every day, and that is also a cause of anxiety which can mess up my stress levels and sleep patterns.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
@JoeMilford I have actually experienced this kind of talk from some of my lazy friends who see it that I'm simply enjoying myself working as a freelancer but what they don't it takes guts and determination, including persistence to be successful in freelancing work.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Corzhens
The distraction is also my concern when I started freelancing because people think that I am at home so they can call me. But when I realized that I have to set some rules, people at home have learned to respect my privacy when I am in front of the computer. When the phone rings, they have to ask me if I would want to talk to the caller and they should not say anything to the caller. When someone is at the gate, the same rule applies that they have to check with me if I want to see the person.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I have been working from home since a long time and one of the major problems with working from home is most of the people do not take you serious. Since you are always at your home, they seem to believe that you are squandering time on facebook or youtube. Another problem is is related to assignments. Sometimes you do not have assignments and sometimes you have so many assignments that you end up working 12 hours in a day.

This is on point. I couldn't agree more to this post. As a mother and a freelancer offline and online, utilizing time is such a struggle for me. I have to weigh what's more important than the other. Good for you guys that you don't seem to be distracted by the house chores that needs to be done. Working at home isn't perfect but neither is working in an office or field. Heck, nothing is a perfect environment, you just have to make it work for you. I am just glad that even though I have a full plate always, I am still in charge of what I need to do and that is something not everyone is blessed with.

We have another user on here who has children also, and runs blogs and I am assuming does other work online. I can not understand how work at home moms or dads find the time to work online when they have children to look after. I would drive myself insane, especially since I like it to be quiet when I am working online, this is one reason why I love working online in the dead of night. Working from home as an online marketer isn I give all parents that freelance online kudos to and hats off to them, real professionals!

I used to joke with my husband if we switched places, he'll know how I run the world. I am not complaining... I say kudos to all who multitasks!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

@Everett it's definitely not easy to be a parent and run packages as freelancer, it's time consuming combined with the chores as a parent. Such parents deserve a good pat on the back because it's not easy at all. Some single individuals are finding working as a freelancer difficult not to talk more of a parent.

I agree. Both types of work have their own benefits and disadvantages and it just depends on what you value more when it comes to which one you will pick as your choice of employment. For me, the time I get to save from travel is just way more valuable since I already spent a lot of my childhood riding on a bus and wasting my time that way so now that I'm older and able to choose I had to go with just working from home so I don't make the same mistake anymore.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

AmieBotella
That is also true that most people who work away from home really spends/waste so much time commuting. Going to work and going home from work. having none of that on a daily basis is a big advantage with work from home.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
@Baburra it's always in one's best interest to make do with what suits such individual well because should one try to copy another person way or working instead of looking to how best his own working should suit that would certainly cause loss of interest in such work.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

You just spoke this right dead on point. No matter how you look at your working environment, be it at home or office, none of them are perfect but it's entirely up to you to make it suitable and comfortable for you to carry out your work without much hitches.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Sorry that you find it difficult with house chores interfering with your work as a freelancer, guys are quite lucky in this aspect unless it's a single dad, then he feels exactly the same way you do. Just take time and mange what you can do and what you can't do.

Those points listed are just about being an online marketer think it also has to do with working from home also.Yes, those points are valid, especially about distractions. At home, a lot of things interfere with one's job.You could get up to do other home affairs job which would take more than one hours to finish up before getting up to attend the work again and this leaves the job undone for the day.But I believe with determination we can overcome those things mitigating against our progress in marketing from home.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It's all about being determined with the work we are doing on the internet. It might not be easy, but showing that resilient attitude can go along way to keep things at check and have a better working experience.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

@Brida you said this exactly as I have it in mind, I definitely agree with you on this dead to the bone. Unwavering resilient attitude is exactly what one needs to succeed in such situations.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Just as you rightly pointed out that with determination one can overcome the struggles of working at home because of distractions which are there within.

But the truth of the matter is that in any place of one's work, there are definitely going to be one form of distractions or another but it's dependent upon one's desire to get past such distractions and achieve one's set goals and objectives.

Working from home in any position is not always great. Let's just face it, if you work from home and especially if you are freelancing online you get paid way less than companies that hire employees. Working from home can have a lot of negative effects, here a few I am a bit more concerned about:

1. Healthcare insurance
A lot of employers (were speaking about US here) will offer healthcare insurance if you are primarily a full-time employee. However, surely you may have to pay into it, but at least you are getting some type of healthcare. If you were to freelance online, you would have to find a plan, and fork out up to $1000 a month for healthcare. Some insurance premiums are costly! God forbid if you get sick and don't have healthcare.

2. Pay Rate
Of course I already mentioned this, however it is note-worthy to add that not only are you paid less than an actual employee, you have to work way harder than an employee that is hired to do the same thing you do online. For instance, say you programmed PHP and say you were making $50k a year. If you were to freelance online as a PHP programmer you really won't make that much, probably not even close to $30k a year. I have yet to meet a freelance programmer that was about to make more than $30k, unless they were contracted by a company.

3. No time off
Let's face it, if you are working online as a freelancer, or just working online in general without being employed by an actual company you get no time off. You have to be working actively every day, and this can get quite mentally exhausting. I, myself, do this a lot and yet I can not take that much time off for myself. Some people say "get over it, you work online" but they are not realizing the amount of work that goes into earning money online - it's never easy!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
This is also a great response here and so true. No health insurance is definitely an issue for the at-home worker/freelancer. You have to find a way to pay for your own insurance, and this can be very difficult, tricky, and expensive. Also, the pay is not so great, and even worse, the pay can fluctuate from day to day working from home, so this makes it pretty hard to have a consistent and planned budget. Your last point about having no time off is also relevant--we do not keep "regular" hours while working from home, and potentially, one could work twenty four hours a day and never be finished!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Everett
one could work twenty four hours a day and never be finished!

If you are "finished" with your online work then something is really long. If you are freelancing you need work every day and as much as possible. However, do not take on more than you can handle, it will come back to bite you in the future. I am not even quite sure if I have said I was "finished with my online work" this year. This year has proven to be a very interesting year in terms of freelancing, well at least for me. I mean interesting because I basically have to go out of my way (as it were) to gain clients and make sales. Something has changed in my niche and I am not too entirely sure what it is, but it needs to change to something to where I am profiting.. perhaps I shall use cryptocurrencies? Who knows.. .:/

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
@Everett Your points on the downside of working as a freelancer are quite agreeable and the option number one is what I would agree mostly to. Being a freelancer, one certainly lose the privilege of having work health insurance as to what those that work for companies do enjoy.

This can really be a problem because ones health is totally decides the person's wealth as some scholars put it. It's dependent on the individual's ability of taking very good care of himself in order avoid falling sick.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I have also seen that there are some other issues with the same. For example people who work from home. They tend to have less relationship outside. And they remain single. And that can be bad if you take the long term view of the things. You can see that some of the time online marketing takes a lot of mental and the physical toll on the body. And that can be bad for the health. So always working online is not going to be good for the people around.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
I disagree on the fact that those that work from home remain single considering the presence of online ratings sites that helps to hook couples together which is amazing. One more thing is that when we look at it from that angle, we should see the good part of every dating site.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

overcast
But we are talking about the freelancing not a dating site. Dating site requires real world interaction too. In case of the online marketing. You need to be really thinking about the freelancing being affecting real world. So on that note I'd say that working from home has it's set of the limits on many ways.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
@Brida I have seen lots of dating sites, good one at that and I have actually hooked up with some new friends but definitely I don't think it has anything to do with freelancing, unless one is taking a detour to connect with new people if there is time for it because of the commitment to freelancing jobs.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
@overcast I would say that those who are more into freelancing work would perpetually remain single, I can agree that they have less time to have a social life because of mostly working indoors but they do tend to go out once in a while and there is every tendency of them hooking up.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Baburra
I agree but it's not really something that I didn't know going into it. I knew there would be downsides, but like you mentioned, the benefits outweigh it for me so I still would go with working from home if I had to choose all over again. For the most part, I appreciate it most because I get to skip traffic going to and coming home from work, which can take hours from your life each day and if you consider that you can appreciate the hours you spend at home being bored sometimes because the alternative is just much worse.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Truth be told, there is no need beating about the bush in sticking with the benefits of working from home compared to working in the office. Home work would afford you the opportunity to do other things without feeling confined in one particular job or answering to anyone because you are your own boss.

Working from home as an online marketer is great and can turn you a millionaire in a few months if you are hard working. It requires a lot of personal commitment and readiness to get things rolling as soon as possible. For instance, if you want to be an affiliate marketer, you will have to create a website and build the website by spending an appreciable amount of time daily on SEO activities.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It's definitely the time one dedicate to his or her online work that determines the kind of income one makes from such work. So therefore, if it's a penny you desire, then you need to just dish in little amount of your time to the work but if you want more, you need to up your game and become drowned in the job. It's fun anyways, and I do it most times.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

The advantages that I see for an online freelancer are you don't have to force yourself to go to the office and the opportunity to earn bigger compared to a regular day job. For a startup freelancer, there's no guarantee that you'll be able to get new project immediately when you're currently working is done. Competition is high so that it is really necessary to be good at you're offering to standout from other freelancers.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

The competition is what makes you up your game when working as a freelancer because if it's that easy every Dick and Tom would be involved in the work but the few in it strives to be the best among others in order to be chosen first for any project.

And you must keep on learning and upgrading your skills to stand out from many competitors. Start up freelancers that do not have excellent skills and proofs could hardly get projects.

Everything is dependent on one's schedule and how one plans himself or herself. Eventually even in the office, there are definitely going to be some of the incidents that interfere with ones work at home which still occurs at offices.

Take for instance the distractions, lunch break and boredom. All these variables can still very easily crop up at one's work office. So therefore, how you manage such can determine how focused you would be with your online marketing jobs.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Though I would like to slightly agree with you that the schedule we have at the offices can also bring about distraction, that cannot be compared with the type of distraction we get at home which can even result of forgetting totally that we have a duty on hand to deliver.

Well it all depends on how you plan your home, personally I have my study room which is also my work room. The moment I seclude myself into the room and lock it up, I won't have any form of distraction unless I decide to step out of it.

Maybe you can try that out and see how it works for you, unless of course you don't have much room space in your house to make one your study room.

My main concern in my freelancing at home is the time schedule. I couldn’t just work any time because there are chores to do and there are people doing things at home like cleaning the floor or watching the news. That means I have the time constraints. I could only work early in the morning or after dinner time when the activity in the house is not high. I also have my dogs that sometimes bark for my attention.

My advice is to find a way to arrange your daily schedule and see when it's best to fix your work hours, once you have done this and stick to your routine without deviating from it, you are certainly going to see things working out well for you.

Feed your dogs when are supposed to and do your chores very early before the day breaks, I believe this way you will find a perfect time for working your freelancing jobs.

Online marketing involves your passion and how you want it, as far ad you know the worth of your marketing skills you don't have to bother about how easy or not it is, online marketing is really very easy I don't get to worry about breaks or whatever it is. I don't get distracted when am working neither confused, I get happy all the time and sad if I don't get request for marketing, thats how I do it I guess I am weird to say it isn't stressful or time taking.

@potentialwriter, I 100 percent agree with your sentiments. Working online is entrepreneurship. Do you see Bill Gates or Richard Branson, sitting and sipping Pina coladas all day? No, they are busy working. Those complaining about time management or lack of structure are not suited for this life and are employees. I also agree they are yet to figure out, how to work online. They should blame this on themselves and not on working online. To work online you need to be super organized and disciplined. This is not for everyone. However, if you want to succeed, these are the traits you need to cultivate. You also need to have self-esteem and the belief that you can do anything.

I worked from home for a year and the main things I battled with were :

Laziness (dress code) - There was no motivation to get dressed, put on make up etc as you would working at an office. Often my slippers would still be on my feet at the end of the day. I had one or two embarrassing incidents when surprise visitors actually thought I was off sick.

Not being able to "switch off" - An impossible task for me, I never actually left work, I lived at work, which meant I never was able to completely relax.

The favours - People assume because you are working from home that you have loads of time to complete errands for them while they are at (real) work.

There were certain advantages though, including being able to put in great work during the night - when the world is quiet.

I can totally relate with the dress code. Sometimes when you're so into your work, it felt like the hours just flew by and then you'll realize you're in the same clothes you woke up. I am slowly changing this by dressing up for work even at home. Although i will still be caught wearing slippers, but, it's a n improvement to see me decently dressed and somehow it felt good to like dress up for "work at home".

Working from home as an online marketer is the best and greatest job for me and for most entrepreneurs in the world. When someone says online business isn't great

You are right, my condition is even worst, I have been doing IM since 2006, everything was very satisfactory in starting, but now after 12 years, I could hardly do work for 2hrs, and rest of the time got wasted watching movies and sleeping and all that. After considering my own condition Now I decided to get an Office on rent. Let's see..

Taking breaks is very good for everyone even if its just stress at work or long hour programming behind the computer.

it does the body good to stretch your legs and grab something to drink and or eat. it always works for me after long hours doing just about anything job related as i am purely an online seller.

I agree with you its very rewarding to work online doing what you love i quit my 9/5 job after 3 long years of stressful work place.

Never been happier.

Just a thought but its still just my personal opinion so take it with a grain of salt if you will.

I would have to agree in that sometimes I lose track of time, that a 4 hour job can sometimes become a 10 hour job. What I meant is sometimes when working at home I became complacent, lethargic and slow unlike if I where employed in an office, where there are time deadlines on what i have to accomplish per day. I've experienced this a lot in when I was just starting out doing online work from home jobs, but after several months, everything became normal through focus and determination.
