A serial blog for captive readers

A serial blog may not be unique but not common either andthe “hook” for the readers is the continuing story of a character or a place or
an event. Take the case of a travel blog that is about a country. The first
blog can be an interesting introduction to the place so the readers will be
awaiting the next blog about that country. And if the place has an unlimited
spots to be featured then you can have a series of blogs about that country.
It’s the same with fashion blogs where a particular model can have a series of
blogs that would include not only the fashion but also some personal tidbits of
the model. It is not bad to slightly stray away from the theme but be sure that
the focus of the blog is still on the topic. In other words, the serial is
supposed to be about the subject.

I can totally relate.A blog that needs to captivate it users should also have a bit of personal touch so that the readers would be in touch with what the subject matter is all about. I try to do this with my recipe blog,I try to run them in series so that readers would long to return for the next article about a particular, this style helps to bring back readers which helps the blog to have constant traffic.

I really like the idea of a serial blog. I wasn't really aware of what it was until I read this post but I think it is definitely a great idea. I think the biggest benefit of a serial blog is that you can create a loyal following which means that your readers will definitely return to the blog to read what you write next. If you run a series, you will definitely get returning users which can help you create a steady stream of revenue from advertising due to the almost guaranteed number of traffic you will get.

I think the idea of serial blogs is good / interesting (when it is something well thought out / developed and also when the subject being addressed allows this), but particularly speaking, they usually don't arouse me much interest because it's a format that doesn't work for me.

It's not my kind of thing. Simple like that.

I think that this would definitely be an effective way of blogging. For one thing, I believe that people really like consistency. When they find content that they like, they are going to want more of it on a consistent basis. If you can keep the themes tied together and give the people dependable content that they can "tune in" to, you're probably going to develop a pretty loyal fanbase. Not to mention that it also makes it easier on the blogger, since at least for me, I find it easier to plan out topics if I know there will be a consistent theme as opposed to having to jump around all over the place and do research for every new topic.

I write on Mirakee and Wattpad. And it can be one way to blog. There are some of the bloggers who make use of the content to hook readers. And in due process you can see that it may build some authorship around. Though blogging is a different game than writing stories. I think the hook for getting the readers is pretty much the same. So we have to find out what may or may not work for many. I have found that blogging in serial way would be a good approach for captivating the readers.

Using the series method of blogging can go a long way in making readers feel at home while visiting the blog. Also, it is also a subtle way to ensure that the number of visitors to the blog won't reduce rather it brings an increase for every visitor will want to see how the story always end.

I agree with you.

It's a different way of posting about many things, but I think if there was no planning / development on how things will work, the whole job can get very confusing and uninteresting (which is obviously not a good thing).

Serial blogs may not always be successful. My friend started a travel blog and she couldn't attract much visitors to her blog. I enjoyed reading her posts but unfortunately this didn't work out for her. She started concentrating on another niche which is more popular and so far this seems to be working for her. The most difficult thing about blogging is to drive traffic to your blog. Sometimes even if you content is of high quality things may not work for you. I guess it also depends on luck.

Well, I don't think think a serial blog is cool on it's own, the serial should be a sub primal stuff in the niche of the blog, or should I say a category, were you will keep posts about the particular discussion or scenario, you want to be a serial blog in, so your readers can just go straight to the navigation bar and follow them. That's if they are captivating like you said.

I rarely see serial blogs but I have nothing against them as long as they are really captivating. I also prefer serial blogs limited to at least 3-5 series. It will be too boring if it has too many series. Just imagine a TV series taking too long to end, like 5 years. A serial blog will be boring too if it goes like that. The readers will surely get tired of reading it. One thing good about a serial blog is that you won't easily run out of topics to write on since you focus on one topic that can last for at least a week. You don't need to think about new topics to talk about everyday. I take a serial blog like an article grouped into short paragraphs where each paragraph is focused on one thing and when put together, it tells the whole story. A serial blog is a good idea for articles that contain a paragraph that is as long as an essay. Making a series of blog keeps the interest of the readers as it keeps them curious like a TV series does.

I think this is an excellent approach to blogging, and especially forums. In fact, I see this same thing in sitcoms. For instance, in the past, American TV shows like Cheers got a good following possibly due to the fact people connected with the characters. For instance, they might tune in to see what Diane, Sam, or Norm will do next. Will they solve their dilemma? What funny line will Woody Harrelson say next, lol?

I think that is a great idea especially if you have a travel blog or something similar. Individuals will look forward to your next installment. The problem is getting people hooked in the first place so they want to read on.

Serial blogging is a good way to have a mainstay follower. But it takes a lot of creative juice to entice a subscriber for the first time to read your blog and be interested to follow the next one and so on... I also think that it should be just a short series so that it will not be too boring later on. I haven't really thought of this for a blog but this definitely gave me an idea. Thanks

You're right. Sometimes you could do well by stringing together multiple articles by coming up with some sort of theme. It's not easy to pull off as it takes a bit of work and a lot of imagination, but those are sometimes what gets blogs famous and popular. I know I have come across many blogs that have hooked me because of this and not only did it endear me to those sites but also it made me click on multiple articles and continue on digging through their archives way after I have binged on their serial content.

I like this idea. It's like you're giving readers something to follow. This is probably why serials have had success. There's no obvious ending so you just keep reading each new post.

I was just thinking of the blog that I currently go to read daily or on their update day--or used to when the blog was being updated, and none of them have serial content. I am think of Retail Hell Underground, Behind Closed Ovens, Hark a Vagrant, xkcd, Writer Beware, Bent Objects, Escher Girls etc etc. They are on a coherent subject but every post is self-contained. I read them either because i need the information of they are entertaining.

So I question whether serials where content is broken over multiple posts really are a good strategy. Perhaps you could tell me which blogs you read that use this strategy?
