When you are in big competition and need to fight your competitors, then every bit is important, same as image name or image alt tag. Manually it done like:

<img src="imagename.jpg" alt="my seo keeywords" />
while working in WordPress you have separate text box to add / edit your image alt tag in the "media" popup while you adding image to post. I can attach screenshot if you need.

That's what search engine spiders read too and count as point for your SERP

That's actually perfect. I wasn't sure about how to add alt to an image either but now I fully understand it. And that's extremely useful in general not just if you have stiff competition. How much do the alt tags actually help though? Is it just a little or hugely? I am definitely adding them now How to use Alt tag in an image for SEO?

so we create the image alt tag manually by writing the code?
Does the alt tag contain a description of the image? Somone told me it does.
You have told where we have to put alt tag, however, did not get it. Will you please elaborate more? A screenshot will be a better solution.

Yes, you have to manually add the code to your images, you can do that in the text editor, you will see a code button click on it. And then add the text, the text should contain the least possible words that best describe the images.

As explained earlier in the reply. You have the keywords in the ALT tag definitely helps. And it can boost the SEO. It also increases the amount of image query searches too. If you have signed up for Google search console and analytics. Then you can see the updates on ALT tag pretty quickly.

For example,

<img src="keyword.jpg" alt="keyword1 and keyword2" />

This is how I'd surely approach this problem.

Though making them to buy something would harder task.

I have learned most of these things on the moz.com. The site is very informative. And you learn something new from the site every single day. And there seems to be a lot of good content. You can see the blog. You would find some really good pointers and the SEO information on their site. So it's worth taking a look at as well.

When I am using images with my written content, I use keyword as the name for the image, keywords as the description and keywords as the caption. I have never used alt tag because I don't know how to do this. The answers presented here will definately help me. So, I will have to open the text editor and add image description with keywords. I will try this.

I mainly use it through Wordpress when you add media. I always rename the file as well with the same keyword not sure if it helps matters but I do it anyway. I then just put in the keyword as Yoast as well recommends adding alt tags as it comes up at the bottom of creating a post with red, orange or green lights.

Yoast is great. I love their traffic light system because it helps you to figure out whether the search engine optimization that I have done for that particular post is poor, decent or perfect. Alt tags are probably the best thing to use especially for images although I'm not sure how efficient renaming the image file to that keyword is.

I know the title is "How to use" but, while I recommend using ALT tags as a best practice, I don't know if I would describe it as one of the most important SEO strategies. It is one of those things when everything else is equal, it can give you a slight edge for ranking against a competitor. Ultimately, what makes a page worthy of good ranking on search pages is the content quality. ALT tags won't do much if the copy does not, on its own, attract visitors.

Like TimothyAlex said, I wouldn't say that it is one of the most important strategies to improve your search engine optimisation but it is a good thing to do especially considering it does not take that long to do. Regarding how to use the alt tag for images, all you have to do is add the alt tag to the html code of the image:

alt="what the image is showing"

So you would have it like this:

<img src="file" alt="this image is about flowers" />

Yeah, it is not even effective in SEO if you ask me, because I don't think think google's algorithm gives optimized alt keyword a higher ranking over non optimized alt tag. So i think where it is really effective is when the page take too long to load, in some cases, the images won't load, the the alt text will take it place.

It sounds like it is a valuable tool to use, even if it is not the most important strategy in SEO. It certainly sounds like a viable strategy to get traffic to your page. It is simply one of the many great strategies to use for promotion. Of course, it always seems to go back to content.

Almost of people here suggested which you need for your question.
I saw some people used title tag in image but I am not sure it will be effective or not but you can try that to see how it works. Other than that then alt tag is enough for SEO an image.

After adding your image to the WordPress editor, if that's what you use though, then you click on the text editor on your right and click code, then you scroll down, to where your image is located, you will see the image code "src", then you add the "alt = "your targeted keyword". then you are good to go.

Usually i just name an image and input the name of the post or whatever into the alt and title tags. I read somewhere that the alt and title tags are for people that are blind, so when they are on a website, since they can not see images and such that is there to help them grasp what the content is, and to get an overall visual of what the page is about. Very cool if you ask me, lovely that they are included.

In terms of SEO:

However, alt and title tags with keywords can make or break your SEO. If you are using the alt and title tags to keyword stuff then i would strongly suggest against this as you are not doing yourself any favors but rather wasting your time by stuffing keywords. Some people use them to describe an image, some use them to help with the SEO of the entire post. It's up to you to decide what you want to use the tags for but do not over do it..

So generally i would just make the title and alt tag the name of the post and leave it at that. This always worked for me in the past.

So if you have an image that's used as a button to buy product X, the alt text would say: “button to buy product X”. I have read several discussions on using alt tags to enhance the influence of the image with search engines. I guess that is pointing towards the search engine crawlers that are checking on the images. With an appropriate name for the image that is inserted in the alt tag then the post is more effective. I have been trying to learn more about alt tags because it looks like the only way to improve the image in terms of SEO.
