How to expand your current blog into sister niches

When you start blogging, you usually start off in a niche you're extremely familiar with. The only time you don't blog about something you know right from the start is if you're blogging about a learning adventure and you're posting about your journey through the learning process. Normally, people will build blogs in order to post content for their visitors to enjoy, and this means they write it up in their own words and don't do much research because they're already knowledgeable. But what about when you feel you've been posting about your niche so much that you've covered everything? Well, that's not a problem at all, you just need to branch out slightly and make your way into a sister niche that is related to your main niche

Let's say you're writing about snowboards and you've written everything you can wrap your head around, you can now branch out and write about snowboard bindings, snowboard wax, snowboard helmets, snowboard jackets, snowboard pants, snowboard boots, etc.

There are many different things you can write about, you just need to expand your mind a little bit and latch onto something. Once you branch out into a sister niche, it's usually something closely related to your original content. Some of you are saying "If I'm writing about snowboards, I'd also be writing about all the other examples you've given!" and that's not necessarily true.

You could be writing about snowboarding and covering all the categories I've given, but if you're just writing about snowboards, you won't be branching out too much.

You can also write about locations people like to go in order to ski or snowboard, like winter vacation spots in the mountains. In this discussion, if you haven't figured it out yet, I'll be discussing how you can set up your current blog and work with it in order to branch out into sister niches and still keep everything relatable.

Register a basic domain, nothing specific
If you were to register a domain like snowboardssnowboardssnowboards.com, you can't really write about many different things other than snowboards.

In order to branch out to a sister niche, later on, you will need to register a niche related domain, but keep it pretty general so it can still be relatable when someone comes to your website when searching a sister niche keyword.

Think of something like snowboardingtimes.com or wintertimefun.com because they can be more diverse when targeting topics.

Become an authority within one niche, then branch out slowly
Becoming an authority will definitely take time, so you will need to get started yesterday lol. When you are an authority within your main niche, you can then begin to branch out and add plenty of content about sister niches. Your current traffic and subscribers will be able to relate to all the new content you're posting, and they won't think you're just doing a sort of money grab.

You're posting content that they already know about, so they will stick around and read it How to expand your current blog into sister niches

Have a diverse design
When you want to branch out, you need to remember that you design needs to relate to everything you're talking about. This actually isn't a difficult thing to do as long as you know how to make your own images. All you will have to do is switch out some images so your new categories will look exactly what you're talking about.

Sure, you can always add images to your blog posts, but that's just within the content and not on the design.

I've been to a bunch of blogs and websites that begin to branch out and they all do one thing in common, they make their new categories unique and this shows the users that you are not only a professional, but you know what you're doing in the niche. If people think you don't know about the niche, they will likely leave your website and find someone who does.If you can't make your own images, I would suggest searching here on SEOclerks and hire a freelancer to do the new images for you.

You won't have to spend a ton of money, maybe $5 an image, and remember that these are just for your categories and not your blog posts. This means you don't have to spend $5 on a new image for every blog posts since these images should be part of the category design, showing the user they are in the right area of your website How to expand your current blog into sister niches

Have vast knowledge in all aspects of where you're branching out to
If you're branching out to a sister niche, you need to know what you're talking about. If you branch out and post content about something, and the readers don't think you know what you're talking about, they will leave almost immediately.

So, to be the best at branching out to a sister niche, pick what you know the most about and make sure it relates to your main niche. This way you will not have to do as much research and you can hammer out quality content quicker than if you had to research it.If you can afford it, you can always hire someone to do the blogging for you, but this isn't always necessary.

In Conclusion
Branching out to a sister niche is a pretty common thing, but people just see it as writing more related content about the overall niche. You will always need to add high-quality content, no matter if you're writing about your main niche or a sister niche, high-quality content makes everyone happy. Your design will need to be diverse and unique for each sister niche you branch out to so everyone can relate to it How to expand your current blog into sister niches

I always encourage people to post outside their niche. If you know and understand your target audience, there are many opportunities to post topics that will attract those who look most like your core. I think it is the best way to keep people's attention.

We need to branch away sometimes to a related niche to attract new visitors or other's visitors that might have been passing us by because of our niche not being what they crave us.

Sister niche brings more traffic.
it shows we are versatile
it makes us have diverse content and makes us look like an expert.

AGreed! But, I would even suggest going beyond related niches. For example, shared values and principles with your target audience. If you support certain charities or causes, that can be helpful. I remember writing a blog post of how PETA (the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) supported a breed ban on Pit Bulls and was actually putting them down rather than adopting them out. I brought that to my reader's attention, and my site exploded with traffic and comments.

Realizing that your brandable website is your foundation and virtual real estate, you will be able to work something out of it over time. While creating the blog, the use of keyword research tools is needed in order to figure out parameters like the Keyword Quality Indicator, Overall Monthly Traffic and the Quoted Search Results. By building your blog using all these parameters, you will successfully rank high in google and other search engines. Your blog will automatically get indexed in less than 15 days.

I think that all of our niches have sub-categories and sub-genres. Every subject can be broken down into its proponent parts and can branch out like a tree to many other discussions. Once one becomes a bit of an expert in his or her content, I think that it is only natural to branch out into sister niches. I think that one way to facilitate this initially would be to invite guest bloggers to your site from other niches that are related to what you are doing; then, you can use them as a springboard in your responses and conversations on the blog to open even more doors for new categories of content and exploration.

I sometimes write a blog that I think would fall into a sub-category or sub-niche that makes me feel that it is not exactly appropriate. What I do with that blog is to save it in another folder and label it as extra so that when I have time I could revise it. But now you gave me the realization that I don’t really need to rewrite that kind of blog that it can pass off in the sub-category or sub-genre of the niche.

I think the most important thing to do is to choose a name that doesn't force you into a certain niche. If you are looking to expand your current blog into some sister niches then you will need to have a name that can be used for those sister niches as well. Like you said, if you have a domain like snowboards.com then you won't be able to write about football with you if you are looking to go into the broader sports niche.

I agree with you on the need to choose a name that doesn't have to be specific to a niche for that will make it hard branching out to other closely related niches. This can be changed if the blog owners could be able to adjust the name of the website and get things working on it as well.

And I think even if you do choose a name that is a bit too specific to a certain niche or topic, it's not the end of the world. I think that you can rebrand quite easily to allow you to become a blog or website which can be about various niches and topics, as long as they are quite similar of course. Rebranding is not easy, it can take a lot of work but if need be it is definitely a viable option.

I think something essential to achieve this is: the project must have a name that can be seen as comprehensive. Not just the name of course, but the contents that are written in them (blogs or websites).

When you do this (it may not be something easy to do, but it's something very interesting considering your goal), you make it clear that your project doesn't target only a single audience.

Yes. Naming is part of the branding. And in order for one blog to be famous and get traffic. The name has to have some sort of the famous touch in it. And you can see that some of the sister niches are really not much possible to get hold of unless you're understanding the niches. I think this branching out process is not going to be easy though. It seems to be one of the difficult thing that I have noticed in the blogging.

I think the importance of the name can be compared with the script of a good movie, or with the lyrics of some equally good song... It's the soul of the whole project.

If more people realized this, there would not be so many "aborted" projects.

I agree the name is mostly everything. That is why many times the companies change name. And they want to be in memory of the people. And they want to strike the brand. And that seems to be their focus all the time. I am not sure if that is going to be possible for everyone though. Some can pull it off not all the people.

The reasons why the name's importance is so emblematic is precisely because it can get into people's minds and from there not to leave.

Changing the project name until you get it right (with the project in progress) is a fatal mistake for any business attempt.

Yes. I remember I started reading problogger in 2005 and that name was nothing at that time. And now that name is everywhere. And it is hard for that guy to change the name. So it is more or less branding now. I guess it takes years to build such brands. Not all the people can establish such type of the branding.

All very good tips for me to keep in mind once I get the ball rolling on my blog. Although I think it's going to be quite a while before I even begin to consider sister niches. I both love and hate the line "Becoming an authority will definitely take time, so you will need to get started yesterday." Love it because it is so funny yet true, and hate it because it really sinks in the fact that I really should get started on this blog, rather than trying to learn absolutely all of the ins and outs of blogging first.

You're right on the fact that there are related sister niches bloggers can get more contents from once they are done with posting things they know about the particular niche that made them start off the blog. It's quite easier as well to consider the sister niche for it is going to ensure the basic visitors to the blog continue to show interest to learn and contribute to articles posted on it.

Becoming authority in one niche take years. And not something that can be achieved overnight. So people surely need to understand how they have to properly find their voice. And they have to find ways to deal with things. I personally have seen that some niches takes like year to even get some links. And getting natural link is not that easy. People have to work really hard on that point. I think some of the blogs with the small niche do win out over a period of time.

I think that you must think well before choosing your domain name. Unfortunately, at some point, we would have covered all the topics and for the continued success of our blog we must continue writing and this is where sister niches become important. It is not that difficult to write about something closely related to your niche. However, if you are not well versed in the topic then you have to research about it. A sister niche may also drive new visitors to your blog.

i think that is a great idea, and one that if you have shown yourself to be an authority in one area, others might look for you to be an authority in others. This is just one of the great things about blogging. It can be an awesome way to expand your skills all over the area. It is just something that can work for you.

I have often thought of branching out and making sister sites for my blog but ultimately I chose against it because I preferred to just focus on one instead of having to split my attention into multiple ones. However, this was only because I am only treating my blog as a hobby whereas if I am treating it like a job or a business, I would definitely take the advice given here and try as much as possible to branch out and increase my chances for better profits.

I have often considered this, however, I don't know whether I can do this or not. I am on Hubpages since many years, even though I have stopped publishing on hubpages, I still have many articles on hubpages that are earning me money. Since two years, hubpages is developing into a network of sister sites on various niche. Previously, every topic were included on hubpages, however, there are different hubpages sites for different niches. Why did they do this? Because Google likes niche websites instead of a website having contents on different topics.

Sounds like a plan.

At the moment, I have a blog running on Google's Blogspot. Every I teach English via FB Live. After each lesson, I put the notes and the video into a blog article. So far, I have already more than 30 blog articles on the same subject.

Yes, I think it's possible to do sister niches. In my case, I will probably start branching out into writing about how to set up a FB Live broadcast. That would be something which I am familiar with since I did all my research and experimentation when I set up my own FB Live broadcast. Another possible sister niche for me would be to write about the various tools which can be used by anyone who wishes to learn English online. Again, this is familiar territory because I already do that, ie teaching my students how to use mobile apps to help them learn English.

Thank you for always sharing a lot of useful tips. And not only are they informative, there's also a pinch of humor added into your posts. Nowadays, having only one website is not enough. Branching out to numerous other websites is the way to go. And it really is much easier if the websites you have created are all interrelated. It's much easier to create content that way. I do have a minor question - how do you let your visitors know of your other websites? Do you just put a link on the sidebar entitled "related sites"? Or do you include links to your other websites in your articles?

Whenever I would come across a line about being an authority, it makes me think how I would be an authority on my niche. When I was co-blogging, the niche was pets and I am a dog lover so that is somehow my passion. However, pets as a niche is very common and probably there are more than a thousand of pets as niche for a blog. But if ever I become an expert and can consider myself as an authority, then maybe I can branch out to another niche that is not related to pets. I think that is better than having 2 blogs with related niches.
