4 things you should think about when building a WordPress website

Whenever you start your journey online, you will likely be stuck when it comes to your websites design. This is a pretty common thing to run into since you're just starting out and most people in your position don't really know what they're doing. Actually, a lot of people still don't know what they're doing after a year or two in the game so don't feel so bad lol. Don't worry though, Tommy is here to let you know what you should have on your mind if you're going the WordPress route for your design

We all need a nice looking design if we want to be taken serious, but that's just the first step in becoming successful online. You'll also have to focus on branding, email systems that are automated, choosing the right hosting, and even setting up all your social media profiles on any platform you can think of. Now, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to getting a website up and running, but it's what you need to think of first before you start your journey so you have some sort of direction.

Below are 4 of the top things you need to think about if you're going to use WordPress as your CMS



Selecting the right WordPress theme
You might not have any money to invest into a nice theme right away, but I would highly suggest saving up a few bucks and investing that money into a great design on themeforest. I usually recommend themeforest because it's cheaper than a lot of marketplaces and their support is pretty top notch. Sure, you could go to big theme designers and pay around $100 or $200 and get all their themes along with every plugin they have, but that's probably not something you will need right now.

A lot of people will search up their industry+WordPress when they're on the marketplace of their choice, but that will just limit you when it comes to theme selection. Normally I will do the industry+WordPress search and if I don't find anything I like, I will broaden my horizons and just search through a lot of the more popular themes that can be super customized. I don't really care what niche the theme is in, if it has a lot of features I like, it's good enough for me because I can change whatever I want on it


Branding your WordPress website
Whenever we launch websites, branding might not be on our minds, but it should be! If you don't see your new website as something that needs its own custom logo, color scheme, style, etc. you should likely just quit now lol. Branding a website goes a long way and you'll definitely need to invest a few bucks into a nice looking logo that you can use on your website as well as all of your social media profiles.

Think about it, how many times have you gone to an authority website and seen a crumby looking logo along with a bad design and an awful color scheme? NEVER! They always have crisp designs, great colors, and amazing logos for everyone to love. It's not a new thing that you need all of these, but one thing that people forget to focus on is the content. Content can help you brand yourself, you can be seen as an authority within your niche in a short amount of time if you are consistently posting amazing content for anyone that wants to read it


Setting up an email capture system
Many new website owners forget to set up their newsletter systems, which are just email capture systems that are automated to a point that doesn't seem spammy lol. Third party services to look into are MailChimp, ConstantContact, and aweber since they are some of the bigger services out there and are still affordable.

I personally love MailChimp because I can use them for free, up to 2,000 emails, and send out newsletter whenever I want. I can't automate this because that's a paid feature, but that's not a big deal if I'm just starting off a website. Once the website starts showing promise, I will invest more money into the email capture system so I can automate it to a point where I don't have to send out a dozen emails to newly created accounts. I won't send out 12 emails in a week, that's just annoying, I will send out 1 email a week to newly created accounts because that realistically turns into 2 emails a week from me if you factor in the newsletters I custom create and send out myself

Emailing newsletter opt ins will boost your traffic exponentially because they want to read what you have on your website, see what your new products are, hear what is going on with your company, and much more. If you're not going to email these people, don't bother setting this up, but you should always set this up because it's a great way to boost your own business


Selecting the right hosting
This is actually a big thing when it comes to extensive WordPress themes. A lot of themes will have a lot of pages and demo content that can be uploaded, but that takes a lot of resources and you will likely need a decent hosting account to do this. I like using NameCheap with most of my WordPress backed websites because of their support system. If I'm having a problem with my website, I can quickly contact them and they will figure out what is going wrong, then we can figure out how to fix it all I actually had a problem uploading demo content a few months ago and Ania at NameCheap helped me out immensely. The hosting account I was on couldn't upload the content because it was stalling out, so Ania increased all of my parameters to max and I got everything done quickly and easily She then reduced them to a lower amount, but it was still much higher than the normal setup



In Conclusion
This may be a short list of everything that needs to be done when setting up your own website, but it's a few great things to start off with because you'll have some sort of direction and know what needs to be done. You'll likely run into problems with any theme you choose, but most of the time its user error and you'll just need to work through it. If you can't figure it out after an hour, contact the theme owner and ask them if they can check it out. A great thing about themeforest is that 99% of the time, you will get support for your theme for 6+ months and not have to pay a single penny for it
