Some traffic generation methods should be avoided when trying to be profitable

When you start building up your traffic streams, you might think that a traffic exchange or cheap traffic packages might be a good idea to boost your sales overnight, but you would be wrong.  There are definitely ways to use all of the traffic methods I'll be covering below, to make money online, but they aren't the main ways you should focus on right from the beginning if you need to make money.

If you want to make money online, you need to focus on your SEO and PPC traffic streams because those will be your main profit generators, but a lot of people actually slip into the "Buy 1,000,000 visitors for $10" type packages because they start doing profit math.  Profit math is something like I will get those 1 million visitors for $10 and if I convert a measly 0.01% of those visitors into customers, and I profit $10 per sale, I'll make $100.  This would mean I would make $90 profit and I could buy 9 more packages and boost my profits by 900%  Now, this would be amazing and something I would definitely jump into, but it doesn't work like this.  You need to focus on quality traffic that is real and will convert into an actual sale, not some bot traffic that falsely inflates your analytics numbers to boost your ego but drain your piggy bank lol.

In this discussion, I'll be covering 4 popular traffic generation methods that you should avoid if you want to be profitable.  Some of these can actually make you money, but they aren't quick ROI methods, and that's why they're in here.

Traffic Exchanges
I actually love using traffic exchanges to generate sales, but it takes a while to start seeing your investment turn profitable, and that's because of how I do it.  I will set up a buffer website, with a pop-up, and I will send traffic exchange traffic there.  The pop up will then open a new tab when clicked and that's where my main website is.  Some people will click, most people will just wait for their timers to hit 0 and they will move on, and that's why this isn't a method you should focus on in the beginning because it's not very profitable.

You can definitely make money with traffic exchanges, but you need to invest a lot of time and money into website generation and wait for people to click through then purchase.  You'll likely make a couple sales a month from this method so don't focus on it in the beginning since it's not worth your time right now.

Cheap Traffic Packages
When I started out I was purchasing traffic packages that would send "visitors" to my websites.  I would go to these websites advertised in Google or Yahoo and click through to them, make a purchase, and think I'm going to make a ton of money due to me running profit math through my head.  I will think I'm going to make a ton of money because I'm paying $97 for 1,000,000 visitors but I don't realize that the traffic I'm buying is complete bullshit.

These traffic packages will NEVER generate you a sale because they are bot traffic, and a bot doesn't have a bank account lol Some traffic generation methods should be avoided when trying to be profitable  Yes, your analytics will look pretty with all the new traffic, but your bounce rate will suffer, and you will never make your money back.

Solo Ads (emails from 3rd parties)
Some of you are probably thinking "Solo ads can make you a ton of money!" and yes that is true, but you need to know what you're doing and do a decent amount of trial and error before you find the right people to push your products or services.  You'll spend a lot of money before you figure out what works and you'll need to spend a little more in order to find the right lists to get on.

Yes, solo ads make a decent amount of money if they're done right, but there's a lot of testing or trial and error involved before you see a positive ROI, and that's why it's landed in this discussion.

Banner Ads
I personally love banner ads, but they're not the best way to bring in customers, mainly due to ad blockers.  There are hundreds of millions of laptops and desktops out there, and a lot of them are starting to come out with default ad blockers, which means your banners could get seen as a negative thing and get blocked.  If you're paying someone for impressions, you'll still get a +1 view even if someone has an ad blocker, because that pageview counts regardless of them seeing your banner or not.

Banners aren't the best way to generate profits because of another reason, and that's a little thing called Banner Blindness.  This means people without ad blockers are getting so used to banners and ads on websites that they start to block them out of what they're actually seeing.  You can get views, clicks, and maybe some sales but you'll be better off investing in PPC and then SEO Some traffic generation methods should be avoided when trying to be profitable

In conclusion
When you're trying to make money with your website, you need to know what traffic methods are going to bring in sales the quickest.  If you don't know what these are, PPC and SEO, then you will be wasting a lot of money that you may not want to in order to take a chance at making a sale.  SEO is a long-term process, and it's still one of my main traffic methods because I can do it along with my PPC campaigns and profit immediately as well as in a few weeks when I'm ranked Some traffic generation methods should be avoided when trying to be profitable
