How do you pick your ad spots for banners advertising?

When you need to pull in sales, one of the quickest ways to do that is to advertise on other websites. This could be through platforms like adwords or Yahoo! and Bings adcenter for PPC campaigns. You can also try to go the banner advertising route which can either be amazing or a total bust.

How do you pick the perfect website to put your banners on to pull in sales?
When I'm looking for a website to advertise on with a banner it HAS TO BE niche related. If I'm advertising SEO then I need the website to be related to SEO and not something like web design or graphics. This is because people are coming to that website looking for what it's about, so if you have an SEO related banner on a web design website it will most likely get passed over.

How do you determine if the price of the ad position is worth it?
When I'm looking to place a banner I'll always ask how much traffic they are getting if it's not obvious. Normally $100 for 500,000 impressions is a great deal, but it also depends on where the ad is located. If it's a header ad where it will load as soon as the person gets to the website, then buy it right now! If it's a footer ad with 500,000 impressions for $100 then you should avoid it at all costs. This is because not many people will actually go to the bottom of the page and see your banner. Websites will load the entire page and if your banner loads in the footer, regardless if anyone sees it, it's considered one impression. That's why I always try to get a banner above the fold which is the bottom of your monitor when the page loads.

In the past and even now I've had some ad spots that seem incredible because of how many impressions I'm going to get and the price is much lower than it should be. But then I come to realize that the website is just boosting their traffic through bots or software that basically does a slow DDOS attack that doesn't take down their server. This will give them a huge amount of impressions, but you'll get 0 sales out of it. They may have some real traffic, but it's not much. It's almost impossible to tell if a website is doing this because they never post reviews of their previous advertisers. If they did, every platform would be out of business.

So how do you determine if a website is worth putting a banner on?
Have you had a good or bad experience with banner advertising?

I have considered banner advertising before but I have never been too sure how to go about it to be honest. I have always wondered about the traffic. Just like you say it is just so easy for people to boost their traffic reports with bots so how can you really be sure that you are getting your ad placed in front of real people or software?

I would love more information on this topic, since you are the expert at this Razzy I am sure you will feed us some more information.

I completely get what you are saying about the website being niche related. It would be pointless sharing on a different niche.

I think it's very important to do one month test run, don't go around buying a banner for a full blown year not knowing exactly if you are actually going to get traffic or not. I would suggest a trial month at a price that is a little bit below market price.

I will also analyze that website from front to back, there are a lot of tools out there which can give you an idea about how much organic traffic, social traffic or direct traffic that website gets, you need to consider everything and make sure it fits your needs.

This is amazing to know. I am planning on advertising a forum that I'm almost through with setting up on some websites and I think having in mind that it is all about the niche related websites of a thing has gone a long way to make it easier for me to go through.
