How do you deal with eye strain?

I am always suffering eye strain whenever I look at computer screens for more than an hour. Sometimes it even gives me headache. What I do to relieve eye strain is every 30 minutes or so, I tend to stand up and walk around the house and look at different things for like 5 minutes or so. Some people tend to put protective glasses on their computer screens, some wear protective glasses.

How about you?

Standing up, or going for a walk helps me a bit, although I mostly prefer wetting my hands with cold water and gently massaging my eyes. Sometimes the contact for fresh water over shut eyelids can provide an immediate relief.

I've heard about this from somewhere. Is this really proven effective? I mean are there no side effects if you put cold water on your eyes? I always think that it's bad since our eyes are at strain and cold water could potentially make it worst. :/

By a cup of black coffee. It give me awake power for long time. Basically I am habituated to do work on online for long time. I have been using internet from 2001 and I do pass some time online continuous 12 hours. When I do any hard work or any work where deep attention is necessary there time is not a fact for me.

Thanks

Cool. You must have a huge tolerance when it comes to eye strain from computer screens. How I wish I also have that kind of "immunity" but I guess it's just subjective. How do you deal with eye strain? Cheers.

We have a memo in the office advising employees to get away from the computer every hour. Take a walk or do something else for 5 minutes as a way of resting the eyes. One optometrist suggested to relax the eyes by looking at green objects. I am susceptible to eye strain because of the high grade of my eyeglasses. Using contact lenses aggravates the condition when the eyes get tired.

I always reduce the brightness of the screen. I still remember that i saw an article before, If you are working on computer, from time to time stop looking in the screen and focus on something far from you in your place for a couple of minutes.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I tried to reduce the brightness of my screen also before. But it wasn't working very well for me. It made me cringe and I did not like the way my monitor looked specially if it's kind of dimmed. I don't know, maybe I just like to have crisp and sharp colors.

After posting here in this forum about my eye problems, I've been led to a decision to buy myself computer glasses, to which I did. So far, I have no regrets on buying them as they really do work decently. I can work longer periods of time without getting fatigued and nauseous. I bought the tinted ones as I think the tint might offer better results.

Excuse me sir but what do you mean by computer glasses? Eyeglasses or the monitor screen glass? And if it is an eyeglasses, how does your eyes feel when you are outside without them? Or inside? I am worried that I might get used to the glasses and have to wear it every time. x.x

Basically taking a bit of rest or close your eyes in a couple of minutes. There are tons of ways but for me closing my eyes for 15 minutes to 25 minutes rests it. sometimes i fell asleep. For some people washing your face after taking a long time in front of a computer is refreshing, but it's bad for your eyes. it will give you a lot of bad eye sight when time comes.

Hi, Galeg I am using PC protection glasses and I am not suffering from eye strain anymore. I will tell you what I was doing about this in the past, I was taking a break from working on PC and closed my eyes for 10 -15 minutes, after this I was working again on my PC for hours!

I also have glasses that protects the eyes from computer use. They work really great.

Taking a rest every hour is a sure fire way to get rid of eye strains too.

I wanted to try and use glasses but I'm very skeptical. Would it affect your environmental view? For instance if you keep using it on screen and you take it off, you will feel uncomfortable?

I used to had a software called f.lux that dims the light of your computer screen so it fits the lighting around you, what time of the day it is and more. At first, I didn't really notice the difference but after a few hours... damn! My eyes actually felt much more rested. I'd recommend you give it a try.

Another good tip that works for me: when my eyes are strained I go and wash my face/eyes. Cold water really, really helps for the muscles and eyes to rest a bit and you will feel refreshed. And I always take frequent breaks.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Woah, is that software free to download and use? I wanna try that one. How do you deal with eye strain? Yes I do take frequent breaks from time to time. I tend to look at the window or go outside and look for the green trees and flowers. But during night time I just try to rest.

If I feel I have eye strain just take a few moments to relax away from the desk or laptop. I would go for a 15 minute lay down on the bed make the room dark and just close my eyes and rest them. It does work and also works as well if you have a headache it is well effective.

Eye strain is common especially if you are doing long hours of work on a computer. If I have an eye strain, I usually relax my eyes for about an hour looking at the nature or take a nap to refresh my eyes and mind before starting doing work again on a computer.

I usually have eyes strain. whenever, I looked at a computer for more than 3 hours. What I usually do is take a bit rest and relax by closing my eyes for a couple of 20 minutes. It really do help me.

This is exactly what i do before, but my suggestion sir is give a little exercise on your eyes. 20 minutes rest doesn't do match. an hour of rest for your eyes will be good and a bit stretching. there are tons of way to exercise or to stretch your eyes. it greatly helps me every time i took off my computer .

Eye strain could come up after looking at a digital screen for a very long time. This usually happens if the screen is way too bright. Though this isn't applicable to everyone. Some people actually prefer to use their computer with very bright screen mode. It is advisable that the brightness of your computer screen is equivalent to the surrounding light available when you are indoor.

After working on my computer for a long while, I take a break and walk outdoor for some minutes. At times when I get too lazy to get up, I make sure I look away from my PC screen out the window for a while too. You could also opt in for a protective glass too. Whatever suite you would do just fine.

If my eyes get strained over prolonged exposure to the computer screen, I just rest from using my computer or phone for a while to give my eyes a rest. The next time I use my computer though I'd try to lower the brightness of the screen to see if I would not get strained from the changes. The sames applies to my phone too.

I deal with eye strain by taking breaks in between my work every 45 minutes. I will take a walk outside and resume my work. I also tend to use eyedrops if my eyes are dry.

To avoid straining my eyes I lessen the brightness of my computer. Once I feel my eyes tired, I just closed them for few minutes but sometimes its not good idea because I tend to go to sleep.

Hahaha! This is so me. Whenever I take a break I usually go to the sofa or the bed and would stare at the ceiling or eventually look at my phone. Then my eyes will start to get watery and I will eventually yawn and boom! There she goes! Hahaha.

Usually when I have this problem I try to rest my eyes until I'm better. I think the best way is to simply take your eyes off the screen for a few hours, until everything returns to normal.

Washing your face and even sleeping, are usually the best options for me.

I agree. I wash my face sometimes just make head cool and calm. Staring at the computer screen makes my head hotter and eventually it'll lead to headaches sometimes.

My hubby has strain eyes when he use the computer after 30minutes. This is what he did. Go wash your face with facial foam. Use eye drops to release the tension in both eyes. Stay away from the computer for an hour. Drink a glass of warm water.

Your hubby really knows what to do in case of eye strain.
As to my hubby, he hasn't complained about any strain on his eyes when he is on his computer. Maybe that's because it's not for two hours or more in a straight manner because he would once in a while go out to see how the dogs are doing. Besides, he has his eyeglasses on too when he is on the computer.

I do that too. Stand up and walk around. Then I would gaze out the window for something that is green and in my case I gaze at the mountain because I open the blinds at our office room.
I have read that for our eyes to be refreshed we should once in a while gaze at trees , lawns or outside where there are greens. Those refreshes our mind as the green color gives u a cool feeling to our eyes. And indeed, I have proven it to be true.
Besides, I have my reading glasses on when I am at my computer, so it blocks the strain I think, because I don't experience eye strain.

Walk around, look through the widow. Sit back and close my eyes for a bit. I also use eye drops. I have bad vision so this tends to be a problem but I just am used to it by now and I have found ways to cope with it. I never used protective glasses because I already wear glasses (lol) and I've only seen protective screen covers on really old desktop computers, never on new generation ones or a laptop.

Those who are constantly working on computers and cell phone should essentially do some eye exercises. They are simple. One should direct their eyes to some distant object and keep looking for a few seconds and then get back to the closes point and this should be repeated five times. Again without moving the head the eye ball should slowly shift to the right and then to the left each move should last a few seconds. This should be repeated five times. Then one should roll the eyes starting from the right and then starting from the left very gently and this should be repeated five times.
I also use refresh tears moisten my eyes.
These I do with recommendations from my doctor.

That's right. But the problem is, those people (specially me) tend to forget about that and will eventually forget at all. I mean, it's our nature to be forgetful. We even need to be reminded sometimes because once we are attached and too focused on what we are doing, we always forget, and I am guilty of that.

If you feel that you are experiencing eye strain after extended reading, try to adjust your lighting to maximize illumination while minimizing glare, take frequent brief breaks from the visual task, and consciously blink a few extra times. Firmly massaging the temples with your fingers in a rotary fashion for a minute while closing your eyes is often helpful in relieving the symptoms.

You are bound to get eyestrain if you sit in front of your computer for very long hours. The best thing to do would be to take regular breaks. If you work for long hours on the computer then you must go visit the optician and he may suggest some glasses to protect your eyes. If you are having irritated eyes then there are eye drops which you can buy over the counter for immediate relief.

For me, I usually turn off my Laptop/PC first, then just walk around..or if I have headache I drink a cup of coffee, that helps me a lot if I have headache..then after an hour or two I get back to the Laptop again.

Well, the first thing I do when my eyes are tired is to take a break. Go to have some water, blink a couple of times, get away from my laptop for some minutes. I also use some Systane or eye drops to keep them wet. My eye doctor told me to fix the brightness or light on my laptop screen, also I bought computer glasses (btw, not very useful), and close my eyes for a while before continuing working online. Is not like I got rid of eye strain, but at least I stopped having headaches by doing these tips. Hope they work for you.

You need a break every once in a while to rest your eyes. Working non-stop in front of a screen is not good, so we need to avert our eyes and do something else for at least a few minutes to avoid straining our eyes. There's always time for a little break, we just have to step away for a few minutes.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

galegatling
Yeah I'm doing that sometimes. Mostly 5 to 10-minute break from the computer. The problem though for me is during night time. Most lights are closed and my room is not that big and the lights are very bright so I feel like my head will spin. x.x

I usually take a 15-20 minute break from the computer during which I may resort to some exercises that are deemed to relax my eyes. I also opt not to operate the computer in the dark because I have found that viewing with external light makes the process causes the process to be easier on my eyes.

I have been struggling with eye strain since I remember. I have astigmatism and the worst part of it is that your eye is constantly making a huge effort to see a thing. That daily eye strain made me start soffering from horrible headaches. The only solution came when I started using glasses. Sometimes eye strain is sign that you need to see the eye doctor. Sometimes that's the only way you can handle it.

To deal effectively with eye strain, you need to take a minimum of fifteen to twenty minutes of a break from the computer after every one hour of use.You can also use protective anti-glare covers on the screen to reduce the light intensity of the display. You can lower the brightness of the screen. You need to avoid working in very dark environments.Always ensure that the environment is well light while working on a computer. You can alternatively wear dark eyeglasses if you prefer.

I usually take a break from all electronics and sometimes I lie down and shut my eyes for about 15 minutes. This serves as a reboot mechanism for me as my eyes feel refreshed afterwards and my whole body for that matter. Once I return to the computer I am refreshed and ready to roll again. I've heard wonderful results about the computer glasses. I think I will try some in the near future.

I combat eye strain using a number of solutions. For one thing, I try to make sure that the light coming off of my monitor is the same as the ambient light in my room. I find that if the light levels match, then I am much less prone to eye strain than if my monitor was super bright. However, I can't do this when working on designs as I keep the monitor as bright as possible in order to properly see the shades of colors.

The other key is taking breaks regularly. Once I feel that eye strain is setting in, I either take a break to make some coffee, get water, or perhaps meditate a brief bit with my eyes closed. Giving them a small break makes them bounce right back.

I used to make use of the cold water on it. And also taking a ride in the garden. As the green grass has the effect on both eyes and the feet. That seems to be helping a lot for many of us. I think it's not easy to adjust with the eye strain. And for this reason taking break is the best thing one can do. You can see that many people have garden in their office balcony for the same reason. So strain can be controlled that way.

Interesting thing the garden idea. Is there any effect on green color on the eyes? How do you noticed? Never heard about watching green and helping out with strain eyes. I've heard and read about, cold water, computer glasses, eye drops, taking a rest, all of it. I guess I will have to try the garden idea too and let you know how good it works.

Green color has this effect of keeping head calm. Green color and blue color of sky. Both definitely helps with the head keeping calm. And it's been recommended to many people who are undergoing stress. Try Android apps in such case you'd surely benefit from them. You'd find color therapy apps on Android store.

Well, I've been a consistent computer user honestly since 2012. To be clear, my definition of "consistent" is being online more than 6+ hours daily. During this time, I've gone through different periods with eye strain. Some being tenser than others. Usually, after 2-3, my eyes begin to feel dry and scratchy. I learned that in order to prevent eye strain, you must be proactive in allocating the amount of time you spend on the computer per session. The first thing I do is take periodic breaks every 30-45 minutes. Even if it's just getting up to stretch and walking around for a few minutes. Every bit of rest from electronics screens throughout the day helps. Second, I'm using a program called f.lux that works well in preventing eye strain. Basically, when you download f.lux, it runs in the background 24/7 constantly adjusting the brightness and contrast of your screen for optimal use during the day. This was a major breakthrough for me because I immediately felt the difference in my eyes. It doesn't work for everyone, though it's worth giving it a shot. Last but not least, I take vitamin supplements specifically for regulating and maintaining the overall health of my eyes. I suggest Vitamin A and C for heavy computers users like myself. They work together in producing the protein within your eyes called "collagen". Hopefully, my techniques towards eye strain help you!

I have reading glasses I bought from the Dollar Store. I use them all day long while I'm at work on my laptop. I can't read the screen without them. I really don't have eye strain that much. As for taking breaks? I have to go to the bathroom, eat lunch, and pick up kids from school. During those periods my eyes get to take a break. How do you deal with eye strain?

You need to reduce the light of your computer to reduce the effects on your eyes. Also, try getting a computer that will assist further in protecting your eyes and your health when you're using the computer to do anything.

I had just recently read that you should do the 20-20-20 exercise. After 20 minutes of using the computer, divert your eyes to a pattern or green item for 20 seconds and stay 20feet away from the laptop if possible. I say, the length of my arm is sufficient

I just stop whatever I'm doing and sit away from the computer. Drinking water helps because you naturally need to stand up and use the bathroom. This prevents you from staying too long without moving from your seat.

I have experienced that before. Eyes strain is caused of over staring in the computer monitor. What I did to prevent this was I did I break staring in the monitor and let my eyes rest for sometimes. Some other says you need also to wear protective gear which is so true.Consult optometry about it.

I would just go to sleep. My eyes feel refreshed when I sleep. Eyestrain might be caused be exposure to computer or longer time of reading a book. The best thing to do is to stop what you have been doing and just start to rest your eyes by sleeping. Sleeping for a while will really hep you a lot.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I am envious of your remedy for strain. The fact that you can sleep means you are not too busy with work and you seem to be in a relaxing pace with your job. When I am in the office and I get eye strain, I would just close my eyes but I should be aware of what is happening because it is not good for the boss to see me sleeping. But the best thing is the prevention of eye strain that you should not work continuously for more than an hour.
