How important is image SEO?

Hey all,

I don't know much or have great experience when it comes to images/pictures and SEO, therefore, I am wondering how important it truly is? For example, if you're running an online shop with a lot of products and have a ton of images, is it crucial to do image specific SEO?

Thank you for all of your help!

Every bit of SEO is equally important, so is SEO of images, specially when you looking to beat your competitors, everything should be done. Optimizing images on your blog or online store is done for search engine optimization and ranking purposes, but there is also optimization of images for faster loading and improving your website speed.

SEO is done with image(s) names, titles and ALT tags and every one of these can contain your keywords. Perhaps if your keyword of certain page is "Community Discussion" your image would be optimized if it's set like this:

<img src="Community Discussion.jpg" title="Community Discussion" alt="Community Discussion" />

So there you have your image optimized for search engines.

If you using WordPress as your CMS i would suggest using some plugins like "Smush" to optimize all your images for faster loading, so you can increase your loading time.

Hope this helped you to understand SEO of images

Thank you so much for that reply. It made everything a bit clearer for me How important is image SEO? I have been using Smush already for my blog since it has quite some pictures and I love it. It's really amazing because even if you use the free version, you get a high-quality software that processes the images very fast.

I will definitely take more time to look into my ALT tags and to slide my keywords in there to improve the SEO.

Are ALT tags all there is to SEO of images, in the current state of technology?

I remember reading a post on here a while back, discussing the possibility of advances in search engine technology involving increased use of images in the search process. I would imagine that as time goes by and image recognition/identification improves, there is a possibility that image SEO will take even more advanced forms than just ALT tags.

But I suppose if that's all there is to it, then that's all there is, haha. Thank you for the information.

RIght now, it's just ALT tags and TITLE tags that you need to consider for search engine optimisation of images. But like you said, as image recognition and facial recognition software gets better, the actual content of the image might become much more important for search engine optimisation and may even remove the need for things like ALT and TITLE tags.

You are right that the title of the image must be directly relevant and fully descriptive of the image itself. I remember one friend who would post an image on his blog but the title would be different and it would be noticeable that the title contains a keyword that is trending. He said that the trending keyword gets traffic from the search even if the image is not related to the keyword.

I use alt tags from time to time but I have never bothered to truly think about image search engine optimization and how important it is to my site. The thing is though, I just don't think image SEO is that important, to my site anyway, at the moment. I would much rather concentrate on seo for my content.

Well i guess you add images to your blog articles and contents, so they are automatically part of your content which should be optimized for search engines. Search engine crawlers don't see your images, but they read your codes which contain data i mentioned in my previous replay, so that's how you boost density of your post keywords

I have not considered that as much as I should either. I mean people are going to search for sites, so it would just behoove those of us with sites to get our content the best it can be and be cognizant of SEO.

Image SEO is very important just like the text content of a blog because it helps to make one's web pages more appealing and it should be optimized so as to help in the loading speed of the blog and reduces the bounce rate the site has.So to have a responsive site or blog, a better blog loading system and also to enjoy good ranking position then images SEO should be put in place.

Image SEO is important - and it's something our site does quite well in. In some ways it's actually easier to rank high on google via your website images or forum images - than it is back links and what not. Mostly because everything especially tech and the web - is becoming more image and visually driven these days. Video SEO is vital as well.

Image SEO is very important. If you do image SEO, your content will be discovered when someone searches for images. Actually, Image SEO is easier than website SEO. Image SEO includes
keyword as the title,
keywords as the description
keywords in the caption
alt tags.

IMO, image SEO is a best practice. But, alone, it is not a make or break issue. Google really has slowly been moving away from using formulaic practices to rank sites. Think about it, what do alt tags tell you about the reliability of the content or the authority of the site? Nothing! You should use SEO best practices as a matter of good form. But, you should expect that things like image SEO are going to make a big impact.

Image SEO can bring a bit more traffic to your site but you would not worry about it. Nowadays, google shows images directly on their search engine results thus it is difficult to get traffic from images.

Search ResultsWhen it comes to SEO, it's important to use acceptable keywords to help your webpage rank on search engines.
Creating descriptive, keyword-rich file names is absolutely crucial for image optimization. Search engines not only crawl the text on your webpage, but they also search for keywords within your image file names.

I know that image SEO is important for the simple reason that whenever I'm trying to find to an image I get really annoyed that the person who uploaded their image did not make it SEO-friendly and make it easier for me to find it!!! GRRR …! LOL. How important is image SEO?

Actually, I wish I had known how important image SEO was when I started working online, because now I have lots of images I need to go back to make SEO-friendly.

Images which truly represent the particular product that is being promoted are called SEO images and can help build a lot of traffic to a niche website. It doesn't matter what this sounds like, but every product being promoted must bear those necessary images because search engines believe that attaching those images would encourage patronage and will make sales come in on time.

The image SEO is absolutely crucial to the success of any online brand. When making your content, it shouldn't be a block of texts only without adding images at all. Though images must be added to all of your content to enhance SEO for your website or blog, they must not be copied from unauthorized sources, but from authorized sources only. There are hundreds of free photos that you can choose from online. Simply search through Google and choose from a pool of free images for your website content.

Search engine optimization for images is very crucial to the overall result of your website's rankings. Recently, I viewed a YouTube video where a SEO expert was explaining the SEO with images. Optimization with images is very crucial to your website's SEO. Believe it or not a lot of websites don't even utilize image SEO.

Most of the webmasters with a lack of SEO knowledge will just add an image to their site and then just do nothing. When you can actually BOOST your website SEO by adding the target keywords to the image you uploaded.

I can not stress enough about the image SEO. How many times do you think people search for images on Google or other search engines? I know I search at least 10 times a day for images on Google. Think about this next you add an image to your website. Make sure to add the title of the time via the title tag, the alt (which is just basically alternate text) can help boost the SEO of the entire site with targeted keywords. Please do not forget this or you are missing out on a chance to increase your SERPs!

Yes to me I use ALT tags all the time and can be very helpful with SEO. As also some times people use the search in google searching just images. So if there searching for something with a certain keyword and maybe you have this keyword in your alt tag for your image. Your image may then show up in the results, which also they could click on the text which often can take them to your website.

I think images is like contents when it comes to SEO importance. With the contents, it is an advantage if you publish an original content that is relevant to your niche and interesting to your audience in general. With the images, I think it’s practically the same which means they should be original and also relevant to the niche. I’m sure the search engines give a value to the images so if there are several images on a page, that is a good plus factor for the SEO rankings.

I'm new to SEO, from what I have read while doing my research image SEO is very important. It contributes to the probability of you getting ranked highly on google. You also have to remember that people also search for images specifically. If you have put the right keywords in your images this will help you to rank and will help your website to be found easily. If you look for something on google my experience is that websites with images are ranked top. So image SEO is very important.
