How would freelance work be without internet and technology?

Internet and technology has been an innovative tool that has widened the scope of how freelancing is carried out. It made the reach of freelancing unlimited by giving you access to millions of people with the use of social media sites.

Now, can you imagine how online freelance jobs would have been without the use of internet and technology?

I agree that I think it would still exist in some form but in no way with the scope it does now. The internet makes it so easy for people to work from home doing their own thing. Even back in my parents day this would have been a dream...it wasn’t possible to do half the things we can do these days as a freelancer.

Another reason why 'the web' has been so great for freelancing is the ability to string together multiple jobs with ease. Without the web, you'd have to travel to three or four places to meet the client, negotiate pricing and then move to start the work. But in my case, I've negotiated and closed upwards of four new deals on my phone while I was riding the subway home from work. Couldn't pull that off in the 70's. ;)

Absolutely! I’m a mom as well, and have small kiddos - so being able to work from home with the flexibility I have is incredible. I love that I can still be around for my kids but still contribute to my household financially.

I agree with you, it became easy to negotiate and set an arrangement in web.

You are right that it is not easy to be a freelancer without the benefit of the technology. Most of the freelancers in the olden days were the ambulant vendors and the insurance agents who go from house to house. In fact, my mother had bought an insurance from one agent who knocked on our door. It was a difficult job because you are exposed to the elements and there is also the risk of the criminals when you are roaming the city.

I agree with you. Freelance jobs without the internet would be different and few. It would be very far from what we are doing as internet makes everything easier, including the communication among people overseas.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

jaybee19
True. Freelancing is a thing ever since but it was very hard to become a freelancer in the past because there were only small opportunities for freelancers as every job were contract based. Now, with the help of the internet, almost anyone can be a freelancer with their skills without worrying about contract terms and most especially receiving much better salary than before.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

nrnlss
I agree and some don't get there contract extended.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

jaybee19
That is truly very sad. A lot of workers here actually complain about that and that is why our president at the moment created a law to ban contractual jobs. However, the only problem is, not all businesses here are compliant especially those that have connections with prominent politicians and so there are still workers who are enslaved with contracts that are sometimes unfair.

If a person who died 20 years ago is to rise up then the internet and technology will shock them. Internet improves services and makes it possible for many good things to happen. Online jobs are possible while working in the comfort of your house.

I think it would still progress obviously, but the freelancers themselves would take a serious financial hit. Internet and technology have allowed freelancers to pick up work and jobs FAR outside their local area. Build their brands, and long lasting business relationships also. It's really helped freelancers become major players in the marketplace.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

allyn2017
I agree with you, the internet and social medias and website really helped freelance to have more costumers. Maybe if there is no internet we will be back at making flyers and posting it in walls and go door to door?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

stbrians
Technology has advanced freelancing to a certain high level. That is something so good. I concur with you that we shall still move on.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think the answer is very obvious. Freelancing job will be useless and difficult without internet and technology. They are badly needed by the freelancers.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

esteban123
I think it would be very hard to work as a freelancer without the internet because most of the time I am dependent on it regarding on researching some information bout a certain article that I want to make. The use of internet is really advantageous in many ways because it can give us a lot of benefits. I cannot even works with other freelancing sites that I have if I don't an internet connection since I need it to submit articles directly to a certain company or websites

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Jeane
Before people used the internet as much as they do today, freelance writers had to do their research in libraries, others would talk with people who had information they needed, etc. The net has made research a lot easier but even without it when someone badly needed information, they'd find it.

By the way, occasionally when I can't find detailed information about a topic I'm researching instead of buying a book, I visit the local library see if I'll find what I need there.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

esteban123
Yes I agree with you that visiting to a library instead of buying a book is much better because we can save money and time from it. Besides the information that we need might be in the library already which is really good.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Jeane
While it is possible to learn more about anything on the internet, if you want to create something that isn't elsewhere on the net, you'd have to find the information you'll use elsewhere.

It could be in books that are in a library or in old newspapers and magazines. There certainly is plenty that can be gained by anyone if they frequently spent more time in libraries.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

esteban123
Yes that is really true, in the absence of the internet I mainly find some great and useful information mostly in my old books at home or sometimes to some newspaper that I buy in my community.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Youngshark
It can be easier and better to visit the library and get the information without having to burn money buying a book more so when handling a one time short project.

I would think freelancing will stay even without internet. But it will suddenly decrease because internet is the primary reason why we can work at home and stable internet connection is the essential requirements in online freelancing. To the freelancer the internet is the honey and butter so having no internet is means, problem.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
I also think about how the internet opens up so many international doors for freelancing. Sure, you might find that freelancing would still exist without the internet, but you'd really be limited to clients that you could meet with face to face. The internet makes the world a much smaller place!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

stbrians
Let the truth prevail in this matter. If there is no internet then it will be hard to get jobs far away unless you travel or call. Freelancing will decrease and will not be prevalent as it is now.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Jeane
you might find that freelancing would still exist without the internet, but you'd really be limited to clients that you could meet with face to face.

You could go old school - find a directory of publications.

In them you'll find out which magazines accept submissions from freelancers. Their contact information is provided. Next step is to write your query letter and send it to editors who you think might be interested in the article you've written or want to write. The only problem is you'd have to spend a lot of money sending lots of letters to editors.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes, I agree with you. Internet offers great opportunity globally. More works and the chance to interact with other nationality. Experience is priceless. Thou, it's a place for opportunities. It's also a place for scammers. It's best to be careful and be safe.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
True. The one way you could still make it as a skilled freelancer without the internet is to put a large sum of money into other, older methods of advertising. Like billboards, skywriters, flyers and flyer drops, t.v. ads, radio ads, etc. These things however aren't cheap.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
Yes, all those traditional forms of advertising aren’t cheap. There are a lot of ways to advertise on the internet that are free or relatively inexpensive compared to those traditional sources - and that’s another benefit of freelancing in our online world!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

theresajane
I agree with you. Since we can agree that internet has made everything easier, including freelance jobs, we can also agree that freelance jobs wouldn't be easier without internet. Internet is the main reason why the trend of freelance jobs increase.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It will be more work to because internet makes the freelancing job easier.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

esteban123
Having no internet can greatly affects our freelancing earnings since most of the time I am using the internet as my main source of valuable information that I need to make an articles. I cannot do well honestly if internet connection would be absent since I am already used to it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

theresajane
I personally think freelance jobs would still exist even without the internet. But, it wouldn't be as noisy as it is in the online world. Also, freelance jobs would only be limilited to your own country as you don't have the fastest way to communicate with people from other parts of the world.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
Yep. Now back in the day, and still today - there were businessmen who traveled all across the world to get deals done. They worked for major corporations though and normally flew on the company dime. The average freelancer however doesn't have those sorts of perks.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

nrnlss
yes, and you need to meet the client face to face. It will be more expensive too.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

We are only accounting the money here and forgetting about all the time that one will have to take or waste rather in some instances to sort out such deals. It is never guaranteed that they will be successful and this is why I put the word waste there.

Freelance jobs would still exist without internet but it will be difficult and the freelancers will only get the limited opportunity. We all know the convenience that internet brings to clients and freelancers and without the internet and technology, freelance job sites like Upwork and freeeup will not exist. These are the platforms for clients who want to hire experts and for freelancers who need jobs. With the help of these sites, hiring and getting a job is easier.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

cmoneyspinner
This is a great question. It made go and look it up. I was around before there was the Internet and I know that freelance jobs, in particular, freelance writing, did not begin with the Internet. So I did some poking around and found an interesting link.

"When freelance first came into English in the early 1800s, it was used to refer to a medieval mercenary who would fight for whichever nation or person paid them the most. ... " The Surprising History of 'Freelance'

Freelancers still offer their services and bargain for the best prices. The Internet and technology made freelancing a lot easier.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
Man, I didn’t know the term freelance had such interesting historical origins! I wouldn’t have guessed at all that it’d been around since the early 1800’s! I guess that proves that freelancing did just fine in the age before the internet!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

NerdIndeed
Oh yes, of course. Prostitution is the oldest profession since the beginning of time, and I consider it as freelancing. Although if you render sexual services to someone exclusively 24/7, the term might not apply LOL.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

cmoneyspinner
Not so sure I agree with prostitution being freelancing. It was more like forced labor. But maybe we are reading from different history books. LOL.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

NerdIndeed
Haha! You believe that the prostitutes before were forced? I am not sure, but if I am basing my thoughts depending on human nature, I'm sure a few of them did it out of free will too, but not all of them.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

cmoneyspinner
Prostitution is no laughing matter. Human nature? Try to explain to a 12-year-old girl that the reason she's a prostitute is because it's her human nature.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

NerdIndeed
I don't mean to belittle the topic, forgive me, and I do agree that it's not a laughing matter. My point is that people do things based on their very own reasons and needs. We're both grown adults, and explaining it to a 12-year old is not necessary.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

stbrians
So if the internet suddenly goes dead freelancing will still there. It is fortunate that the internet is here to stay and so we shall still be as noisy as ever.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think freelancing was always there as an option to opt out of the people with business and organization. And it was from the start of the civilization. The reason some people always want to go their own way. So it was always something expected. I think it will continue to be there. No matter how people can see the difference with the tech skills. And if they want to work for their own self using it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

allyn2017
I think if that happen, we will back to basic where we send flyers and post some poster in some walls advertising our service and whatnot.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

nrnlss
I agree with you, and where we make a small office in our house.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Jeane
The only thing i hate about these forms of advertisement is that they would come at a cost. On the net you don't have to spend much to tell people about your services but offline, unless you are going door to door, meeting prospective clients and telling them about the services you are selling you'd have to spend money on any other advertising materials.

I like the idea of posters though. Can be a good way to acquire new customers quickly.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Janie1994
Wouldn't freelance at that point just go back to being what it was before? Aside from freelance writing and mercenaries, freelance it basically what all artists did to make a living (unless they lucked out and became an artist sponsored by some wealthy family), artists created art until some organization/family/business noticed them and commissioned them to paint portraits, sculpt statues, write songs, etc. and then the artists went back to whatever they were doing beforehand.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
For certain artists it wouldn't dent their profits. But for most people it would. If you're in a small town or run a small shop, then all of your customers are local. But other people who have a broader audience, they definitely need the web to maintain connectivity with their customers, and grow their base.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Since there is internet then freelancing is done easily online. When there was no internet still there was freelancing and it was done differently. Things improve with technology and so is freelancing. Now we cannot imagine it without internet because we have it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

nrnlss
Yes, there will be more work to do, the rate will probably go up and you will have to talk to client face to face.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

This is the true look of things. The internet improves services of freelancing but it does not stop it if it stops. Freelancing was there and is still there whether there is internet or not. The only bad thing is that internet will harden the work of freelancing should it stop.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Well, I'm actually a freelancer online, and I think not having an internet connection and an advanced technology, won't let me continue the freelancing online.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I am of the same thinking. Without an internet connection, it means I am not earning. Thus, if the internet and technology were to end today, then that would be my end.

Although there are some freelance jobs that were there without internet and technology, they were limited, and hard to get. Most freelancers depends on internet connection and advanced tech.

Technology helped me a lot but I think If there were no internet or computer, I would be a regular employee in a company. I would not have been a freelancer so technology and internet really help us a lot. We can communicate with foreigners with the help of the internet.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Me too. Without internet or technology, I could see myself working in a fastfood chain. Internet gave me an oppotunity to work while studying and I am really grateful for this chance.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Honestly, I'm not that sure if freelancing could still make it without internet and technology. Well, maybe somehow but it will be difficult like you would be doing everything in manual. I, personally, take internet and technology as my investment for my work. Without them, I would not be able to work as a freelancer like today.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

There would be no online freelancing without internet and technologies use for networking. Freelancers would still work offline but with limited and possibly local clients only. For example, a graphics artist would only offer his services to those he can meet personally or through referrals of acquaintances. Or he would be promoting his services through posters and newspapers hoping that people will call him for a job. And possibly most freelancers today would be aiming to get a regular day job to earn a decent income if there is no internet. And the rate of unemployed will be much higher.

The internet makes it possible for everyone to work from home with local and foreign clients. It opened up myriad opportunities to different people regardless of nationality around the world. I'm from the Philippines and many of my countrymen have been given the opportunity to earn big income through online freelancing. Many of them could hardly get a job before. But now they are earning as if they are working abroad. There are others who are working abroad were able to return back home and stayed for good and now are working online. While others have managed to create their own BPO companies and created jobs to other people.

Believe it or not, freelancing existed before the age of the internet. A lot of people, especially the younger generations, feel that the time before the internet was like some sort of dark age where there was no progress and famine and disease plagued the world.

Freelancers still had work, it was just far more limited and localized. As a freelancer, you’d put out ads around town and in the local newspaper that you were providing a certain service. You gave them your phone number and other contact information, and then waited.

Sure it was more complicated than simply creating an online profile, but the career existed.

Can you imagine walking around asking people if there is a job that you can do for them. Also you are limited to working only in your location and the research options are limited as well. Even the imagination is painful.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

@Youngshark Indeed. Also what about the people whose freelance work is rooted in technology? Like developing apps, building websites, coding, etc. They'd be royally screwed if the worldwide web just disappeared over night.

I think that it will be possible to do freelancing without the Internet but it will be very difficult. The first and the most important impact would be on the earnings of all the freelancers. Things that happen in minutes will take hours to complete without the internet. I think that such a situation will be a nightmare for all the freelancers who work online.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

jpk0007 I think the one advantage freelancers would have though in a world with no internet is the opportunity to sharpen their phone skills. Without technology, you'd be talking to a lot of potential customers on the phone. So if your skills in that area are sorely or somewhat lacking, that'd be your chance to sharpen them.

I am old enough to tell you. It was not easy. In post University days, I got lucky and cleaned for a guy who then gave me freelance typing on my Remmington typewriter, freelance teaching and eventually employed me to run a tutorial school. However, I cannot think how I would have worked without the Internet. It was not easy to do other than a paid employee job back then and of course, you could not be International. You had to put advertsi in newsagents, give out flyers and sit by a telephone attatched to a wall in your house.

I had seen freelancers do their thing before the digital technology came around. We had a neighbor who was into buy and sell. He would scour the neighborhood for used items of interest that he could re-sell. We called him “buy-and-sell” because he had been doing that business for a long time. People who need money would sell their electric fan for a cheap price and the freelancer would clean it and even refurbish it so he could sell it for a good profit. The freelancers of yore have to walk around unlike now that we can use the internet for purposes of marketing.

Freelancing work is possible to be done locally. But you need to do heavy networking. And also have to learn more about how the freelancing may be effective in context of making new contacts. Without internet and technology, online freelance jobs would just be the regular freelance jobs that we've had before the internet and all our technological advancements. Freelancers would be researching the old fashioned way, work would still be available but it would be limited to location, and writers would just have to write using the good old trusted pen and paper. Internet is a very helpful tool for freelancers nowadays. But not just to freelancers but even to business owners (both big and small businesses), students, part-timers who are looking for additional income, stay at home parents, unemployed, self-employed etc. The internet is really a great help. You can earn money by just looking for available jobs online that suits you best and working on it. It gives more opportunity to people around the world and it gives you job offers from different countries around the world too. Without the internet, I think we cannot have more opportunities like this. Opportunities will be limited.
