got loads of hits, referer said all hits came from exactly http://facebook.com (no www.facebook.com or subpages) and they didn't do anything on the site i.e. didn't click any links.

Hi you agree that you have got traffic form facebook.com. But you mentioned without www. I want to say please paste two url on browser http://facebook.com and www.facebook.com and you will go to same site. I mean you will go facebook.com. So here is nothing different which you mentioned http://facebook.com rather www.facebook.com.
