Forum discussions vs forum responses

On my forum, I'd rather have more new discussions started rather than new responses to older discussions. What is your preference?

New discussions started is always nice. But you need responses back to those as well.

If you get a lot of new discussions but zero responses, then it will make your forum look unbalanced. Try to encourage the forum members to respond, either with an on forum remember or by email newsletter where you ask for their feedback on specific discussions.

I once worked on a site and for every 4 responses I was asked to give 1 new thread,

On a new forum, it would be preferable to have more new discussions than responses from members, at least until many new pages of content have been built. Though sometimes it can be difficult to get members to post new discussions.

Ideally you need a mix of both. You can not have new discussion that are not going to get answered.

The only thing that bothers me is when a subforum only has 10 or 15 discussions and hundreds of responses. Of course, it's easier to post a response, but most forums need more new discussions.

They need both. A mix of them is great. I think that if a site only has 10 or so threads, then it should be clear that a new topic needs to be started.

Try to offer more new discussions when you are posting on a forum, rather than just responses as this helps out the community.

For me, it is good if you can maintain a balance. When there are too much replies and needing in new threads, that’s where you come in if you don’t have a paid forum poster. But when there are more new threads than replies, I don’t think you can do anything about it. Just let it be and later on it will subside because it is natural for a forum to have more replies than new threads which means if there is an excess of new threads then that is a blessing to the forum.
