Does every forum need moderators?

Admin forums are filled with experienced and new admins; people who should know how to conduct themselves on a forum. These people shouldn't have to be told how to act as they own forums and know what behavior is expected. Yet, admin forums often need an active around the clock staff of admins and moderators to keep the peace. Is that just irony or human nature?

Anytime you put a lot of 'experts' on a forum, each one will think they have the right way to do something. That can lead to tensions among the forum community. For this reason, even an admin or webmaster community will need an active admin/moderator staff to prevent disagreements from blossoming into full out war.

Every forum needs active staff as not every forum member is mature acting enough to be trusted to behave. You will always need to anticipate that some people will register just to troll your forum.

Just because your forum is about admins and site owners doesn't mean that's the only people who will be joining. If it's a public forum, then anyone can join and there's no reason to believe only the best behaved people are joining.

There is one forum that looks like it has no moderator because of the prevalence of spam posts. I wonder why the off topic boards is the only target of spammers. Yesterday, I was surprised because the off topic board was locked. No one can post on that board now. More likely the spammers will be posting on other boards. Truly a forum needs a moderator to maintain order in the forum.
