Limiting guest views of forum posts

On some forums, you will see how pages/posts are limited to guests, meaning you have to sign in after five posts. Other times, forums require login of forum members before any threads are viewable. So how do these forums get new members, especially if guests can't see the discussions on forum? And, is this something you would do, limit guest views of forum posts?

I don't see how this would help your forum in search engines to make it 'invisible' or not viewable by guests, which require pages to be seen so they can be indexed.

Also, you will lose potential Adsense earnings if your guests can't see the posts. They will simply click away after the first failed attempt.

Some of the largest forums use this content locking as a way to prevent outsiders from scraping content for their own forum. It's not too hard to track down someone who has copied your content if they are also a member of your forum as they will usually post a link back to their own site.

I know of a forum that is locked to guests. One has to log in before you can view the boards. In another forum, only the basic boards can be seen by guests. And normally, forums show all the boards to guests. I prefer the second style of showing a few boards to guests so there is a need to log in or to register.
