Deleting subforums. Could it cause you to lose members?

Just wondering what the effect of shutting down a subforum might be. What if one or more members liked that particular subforum and posted there regularly. If you shut that down or merged it with another, maybe they would quit. Do you think that would happen?

Not necessarily, you won't lose members. Most people who visit a forum regularly understand that you must make changes to your forum in order to stay current. If you have to delete a subforum, try to explain to your forum members why the subforum was deleted or merged and provide an alternate place for them to talk on the forum.

Get your forum members involved in the subforum changes, asking their opinion so all this is not a big surprise. If you get people involved and they make suggestions, then later they won't be so surprised when the changes are made.

I don't think a subforum is a big factor in the membership. But let me ask this, what is the reason for deleting a subforum? Maybe merging the trends of a subforum into another board is better because deleting such will diminish the content of your forum. And before doing that, an explanation should be posted for everyone to understand. It's not good for a member to be surprised on the sudden change in the boards.

I think it is wise not to shut down the sub forums, maybe you should ask the members opinion about it. It won't affect much of the traffic.
