How many people does it take to start a forum?

When you start a forum, how many people should you have on staff or in your member base before you really go live and start advertising and promoting the site to get new members?

You might only need a few people including yourself to create enough new discussions for the forum, so long as you could add something new to every subforum. The work load will be more if you only have one person. So, at least have a good admin to help you start.

To really get enough forum posts to show variety, you would need at least ten people. These people could be friends or staff members. The posts created by these people will help attract new members who will post more on a regular basis.

Well, it really only takes 1. But many people tend to have a full staff team before they publish the site to the public. That way they have a good moderation team all set and ready.

Most forums start with just one or two people but the results is not all that good. And, you can see this on many new forums where there are only a few discussions and responses spread out over a dozen subforums. So, you might think about opening up the forum early in beta to get some early members coming by before the official grand opening.

This was the experience of my husband when their forum was beset by an exodus. There were 6 of them left and they persevered by continuing to post as if nothing had happened. I think it took them a month to gain new members for the forum to be back to normal. For a new forum, maybe 6 is the magic number of posters that you need.
