    What do you think of hello and goodbye posts?

    A hello post is one where the new forum member posts an introduction to the community. And, a goodbye post is one where they say goodbye when they are planning to leave. Though hello or introductory posts are common, the goodbye posts are not seen as much. What are some advantages to allowing a forum member to post a goodbye to the community if they are planning to leave? What are the drawbacks?

    A goodbye thread would just be another way for an attention seeker to draw attention and get sympathy. That would discredit your forum if they just popped up a few months later.

    This is good. I thinks its just natural for newbies to to do this. I believe they are testing first the site.

    Why not just let the person say goodbye in their intro thread? This thread is about updates anyway, not just a place to say hello to the community.

    If the person were on forum for a few years and had to leave, then I would let them make a formal goodbye statement so long as their reason for leaving had nothing to do with my forum.

    But, what if the reason they are leaving has something to do with disagreement over one of your decisions? Would you be so willing to allow a thread like that to stay up?

    For me, the introduction board is a necessity in the forum because it is usually where the very first post goes. And although it may contain short information about the new member, that’s fine. I am not comfortable with the exit board or goodbye thread. Just remember that a leaving member is more likely due to a negative reason. It will just annoy you if the goodbye post will contain expletives or bad words. To be safe, just forgo that goodbye thread.
