Real name vs alias usernames

What's your view on using real names versus an alias as a forum username? Do you prefer to see forum members with real person usernames or do you discourage this for the sake of privacy? From one point of view, I think real person usernames allow the members the chance to know each other better. Then again, if someone is using their real name (first/last), then there is a chance their privacy could be exposed on Facebook or other places where a real name is also used.

I don't mind using my real first name. But I would be hesitant to list a last name. Also, I don't think there is a real reason to do this either. Why would someone need to know my last name on a forum?

Whenever I see that someone has used a first name on a forum, it makes me think of them as being a friendly person. Now, maybe that's just my impression, but it goes a long way toward making me like that person.

On a niche forum, a fanciful name could be more acceptable. For instance, with a gamer forum. you might pick your favorite game character to use as your name and that would add to the fun of the forum.

Of course, I prefer to see the real names of forum members but I understand that the internet is a free wheeling society where the community members have the freedom to use any name and any disguise. My profile name, however, is coined from my real name. By the way, with the hackers and posers in social media, I guess there is good reason not to use your real name.

I use my real name when I'm forced to. Otherwise, I use my alias which I created for the simple reason that it's easier to spell than my real name. Real name vs alias usernames
