Do you split off posts that go off topic?

Sometimes, on my forum, a discussion goes off track when someone asks a question out of context. So I just split off the post to become a new discussion.

Splitting off discussions will give you more great content for your members to post on, rather than just one long endless thread where no one can find posts.

Make sure people don't get too rowdy in your discussions and go so far off topic that you can't find your way back or even the split off topic won't make any sense.

You'll want to be careful when splitting off posts as people can get offended their contribution was cut out. They will be asking where their post went.

This could work if a forum discussion had been very popular to start with and then got side tracked or derailed by a few people. Just splitting off the offending part and titling the new thread might be enough to get the discussion going again.

Splitting off posts is fun as it instantly gives you a new discussion that other forum members will want to respond to. And, every split post is one more new page on your forum, which is a good thing for SEO.
