Is it a good idea to hire your friends to be staff?

Would it be viewed as favoritism if you hired your friends as admin or moderators for your staff? Or, does the friendship bond actually help with forum management?

I suppose it would depend on the type of friendship you have with the person. How well you know them? Realizing the differences you have with the person, and working on those differences would be a must for a good working relationship.

I would view it as favoritism, as issues will arise with approach or behavior that's coming from them or the other members. It would have to be corrected immediately. How will it get managed? Would it be forgotten about? "Oh, brother Joe has been having a bad stretch of luck lately. That's alright."

Would I ask my friends or family to assist in my forums? Heck NO!!! lol
For a number of reasons, of course. They know nothing about websites, and I do NOT have the patience to teach them. It would just be a nightmare. I'd have more issues to try to fix the problems than not...lol

Hiring friends can have an upside too as you would be able to trust that person more than a stranger that you met on another forum. This person would be accountable to you and not likely to sabotage or mess up your forum as a stranger could.

So long as your friend is competent to do the job hired for, such as spam moderation, then you should not have any issues. You will need to make it clear that you will not allow rule breaking or bending just because that person is your friend.

If your friends are trustworthy and they are up to the task then that is good. Having people close to you aboard the forum's executive boat is much better than hiring people you don't really know. With favoritism, why let the community know about your relationship? Just be natural on the boards and no one has the right to question the admin's hiring of moderators.

My answer is No. It's not worth losing a good friend over a lousy job. When you hire a friend eventually there would be a situation in which you would have to disagree or fight with each other and most of the time I've seen good friends became enemies as a result. In my opinion it's best to completely separate your work and your personal life. Don't get your good friends involved in your business and vise versa.

That is very well said. Never ever hire your friends and even family in your business. I had experienced it and I realized that I was wrong. Things became complicated and it gave me a lesson about it.

Friends or not, i would hire them only if they have enough knowledge and abilities to do their tasks for any business or website. No matter how good friend it could be, if he / she can't do a good job for you, it's waste of time and money, but it can even cost you loosing your business

If I were on your shoes I would not hire my friends to be a staff or admin of my business. Most of the time the reason why there has an issue in the business is because of the friends that we hired to work with us. They used the special bond between you and them because of friendship over work. I would rather hire different people at least I could tell what should I have to say to them without thinking that might something could affect any relationship.
