    Is Facebook replacing forums?

    At one time, forums were a great place to meet others with similar interests and have great conversations. Now you can get the same experience on Facebook.

    And, almost everything you can do on a forum can be done on Facebook including a Facebook forum, group or page.

    Is Facebook replacing forums? Or, can forums provide something unique not available on Facebook?

    Facebook is a generic catch all site, not really targeted to niches. And, though there are Facebook pages, the are surrounding specific products and services, not just niche categories such as you would find with a forum.

    There's no way you will ever get the kind of in depth conversations on Facebook that you can have on a forum. People are just on Facebook talking with each other socially and the ones who visit pages are more like fans of the product rather than experts interested in exchanging information (as you would find on forums)

    For some Facebook has replaced the forum as a way to find friends. But, these people had a real need for the friendship factor, another way to connect with real life friends and meet new people. So obviously, Facebook filled that need, rather than just replaced forums, which were not doing an adequate job.

    Forums are still a good place to learn about your industry and establish your own credibility as a blogger for your niche. Facebook won't ever replace that.

    You could do this on a Facebook group, especially considering the privacy settings. Though it might take awhile to get accustomed to the different posting format (such as where all posts go from earliest to last in one endless column rather than subforums), especially if you are an avid forum user.

    The general forums are pretty much dead and gone now as a viable forum option. If you are just starting out with a general forum and not specializing you would have a hard time getting others involved. You could tweak your forum to have at least one sub niche apart from general chat and this might improve your membership rates or the number of people signing up to your forum.

    The general forums are pretty much dead and gone now as a viable forum option. If you are just starting out with a general forum and not specializing you would have a hard time getting others involved. You could tweak your forum to have at least one sub niche apart from general chat and this might improve your membership rates or the number of people signing up to your forum.


    If you already have an active group of friends online, you might start a forum where you can associate with them. This might be useful if your favorite forum goes out of business or you lose your Facebook group.

    I do not feel that they are replacing forums. I am on both and find them to be very different from each other.

    I love forums for niche talk. Though I have been on several general chat forums that had a nice vibe to it. For some reason, the chat forums don't feel like Facebook to me.

    With Facebook, your timeline is like your forum profile page as you can include a status update, just as you can on a forum.

    Facebook groups are more like the forum discussions as they encourage people to interact and talk to each other.

    In these ways, Facebook and forums are very much alike. But, on Facebook, the profile page is most important, while on forums, the discussions are.

    I do not think that they are similar at all. I would have to say that forums will be around for a while just because they are a tailored niche.

    It is like comparing the proverbial apples and oranges. Facebook is a social media that is designed for pictures and videos while a forum is designed for conversation. In forums, there is a theme and the boards divide the forum into categories for the convenience of members. My prediction is that forums will not vanish and Facebook will be experiencing calamities in the years to come.
