    Do you think it's possible that a story could have a main character who is not human? Maybe the main character could be a city or object?

    In a way that's the main point of Batman, as Gotham city is the backdrop and everything else revolves around that city. It's not just about Batman.

    Yes you can center a story around a city or place. There is not a rule stating that it needs to be about a person.

    I have some friends who are story writers and some are scriptwriters for movies. A story can have anything for its main character whether animate or inanimate. But in your example as the city, you need to have a good imagination for the city to be alive and dynamic. If I were to write it, maybe it will be a thriller where migrants to the city become very rich or very poor. As for the how, that's where the mystery is.
