Common reasons for irrelevant ads on Adsense

On some sites I visit, the ads in the Adsense box is not even related to the site content. Is there some reason the ads showing are so irrelevant to the site content? Why do irrelevant ads show on a site?

1. Because you are logged in to Google's account. If you search on Google for fruits and vegetables often, you might get ads for that on a website about cars or airplanes (that's the beauty of Google's custom privacy).

2. Not enough advertisers for those keywords and Google just throws in other ads.

3. Google hasn't analyze the content very well just yet. Things might have changed since I used Adsense, but when I started with it, I threw ads on my blog right after I published my first post. It took 2-3 months for Google to show related ads only.

Google traces your online activities. If you are searching something on Google, Google and will show related ads on the websites you are visiting. In order to avoid this, you will have to sign out from your Google's account.
Adsense is a contextual advertising, which means the ads displayed on the website will be related to the keywords used on the webpage. However, if there are no focus keywords, adsense will show unrelated ads.

If your content is in an iframe, the Google ad bot won't be able to crawl it and can't see what your content is about. Then any ads shown won't relate to your actual content and could just be referencing sites visited recently.

In the situation where you are seeing unrelated ads on a blog or forum, this could happen if the site owner has not specified that ads shown should only relate to the content of the site. In that situation, Adsense is showing ads based on your personal surfing history. So for instance, if you have visited sites about free movies, you are likely to see ads for Hulu or Netflix, even on a baby or parenting website.

There is a difference between a site that shows the wrong ads and one that does not show any ads in the space designated for Adsense. For this latter situation, the cause could be that Adsense has determined the site has unsafe or inappropriate content and is refusing to show the ads. The webmaster should remove the offensive content to comply with Adsense TOS.

You must optimize your page for the keyword and deactivate ads based on user preferences. But the last option deactivation may lower your revenue!

Sites which are using session IDs, may not receive targeted ads on those pages. To fix this problem, remove the session ID so the pages can be indexed and crawled properly so they will show advertising from Adsense.

Adsense is a contextual advertising, which measn it will put ads on a certain site based on the primary keywords used on the site. For
example, if your site is about maternity clothes, adsense will use your keyword "maternity clothes" and find appropriate ads.
Secondly, Google traces your activities. What ever you search on Google, Adsense will place similar ads on the websites you visit.
