Find Facebook groups that are related to your site niche and talk about your niche/site there. Make a connection with others in your industry on LinkedIn and Google+. Be sure your link is in an obvious spot on your profile or page so that others can find it when they click through to find out more about you.

If I were to sell action figures I would probably see more success at websites and stores geared at that market than if I promoted them here, etc.

That means people are finding your site naturally through searches without paid channels (saving you money). Referral traffic is also great because that means that other sites are linking to you to funnel traffic through.
