While social shares may or may not affect a webpage’s position in search listings, your social profiles definitely influence the content of your search results. In fact, social media profiles are often amongst the top results in search listings for brand names. When I searched “General Electric” in Google, the company’s Instagram and Pinterest profiles appeared as the 5th and 6th listings, respectively, and Twitter was the 8th result.

I don't think sharing links on facebook or twitter for that matter will have your site get better ranking on Google. Google does not count facebook and twitter sharing as a backlinking. However, sharing on facebook and twitter will help you generate social signals and traffic. If you generate social signals and traffic, Google will rank your content higher.

In the not so olden times, posts in social media about your website is not considered by search engines but in the recent times they are called social signals and the links that you post on your Facebook timeline is considered a backlink. Why not? The post you made last year about your website can still be read by your friends and the link you left there can still be clicked and give traffic to your website.

In essence yes, because having your backlinks in social media will get you more views and higher views will increase your authority and will have a positive effect on your rankings. What I know is that social media shares affects rankings, so it's in the number of shares that can affect rankings.
