I want to start a forum but have no idea how to do SEO. What should I be doing for it?

Get your site out there. SEO will help it rank higher, which is what you want. Get some backlink, do signature links on forums and blog commenting.

Don't go for a general chat site as there is lots of competition and they are hard to rank in Google search. Focus on a specific niche, so that all your forum pages relate closely to that niche. Make sure your forum is about a keyword(s) which are very popular on Google and not a low popularity (rarely searched) keyword.

Make the forum more creative and rare, do what people really like, then this may make people post more to your forum/

You'll be more likely to put in the time required to make this type of forum succeed if you really like the niche and don't mind hanging out there and talking with the members.

A forum needs content so you should develop content first in your forum, if you are developing content in your forum on regular basis, your forum is good for search engines as the content would get indexed in search engine and you would get benefit of SEO.

There is one forum that caught my attention when I created a new thread. It was asking for a tag or keyword and the required is at least 3 keywords. I had no idea why the need for keywords until I came across this site where I had read about keywords in some discussions. So I guess those keyword stuffing for new threads in a forum is one good way of enhancing SEO capability of the forum.
