Good spelling and SEO

Is there a link between good spelling and better search engine position? Will Google reward you if you have good spelling and proper grammar on your site? Will Google punish sites that have poor or sloppy spelling or does it just not matter?

Matt Cutts talks in this video about the effect of good versus bad spelling in a website. And, how though good spelling (or misspellings) were not used as a direct ranking factor, sites which have proper spelling are 'trusted' more by Google. So that could be something to keep in mind. After all, if a site is hastily thrown up for ranking purposes, then it will likely be full of misspellings and other factual mistakes and would not deserve respect from Google or site visitors. Where as, a more carefully planned out site will be looking for any of these mistakes and ensuring the best user experience, even when it comes to something like spelling.

And, what good is a blog that ranks well if it's full of misspellings and grammar errors as that will only drive away the real people who the blog was meant for. After all search engine bots don't buy things, they don't click on ads or in any way help you earn money. The people who are going to click your ads are the ones reading your content, so it should be well written and sound literate.

I was very happy to find out that this subject had been covered by Google already. Of course, it's important to have a literate sounding page, with good quality content and that includes good spelling and grammar.

After all, you can't say you are an expert if you can't spell well enough. That's especially true for such technical terms associated with legal or medical matters.

And, how will Google know whether or not you are using proper grammar? I can understand how they would be able to detect misspellings. But aren't some misspellings common online? I don't really think that anyone would misspell on purpose. And, is this to be a determining factor as for whether information is relevant now?

@ savonne, i think to be on the safe side, it pays to be very sensitive in the issue of grammar also, not focusing alone on the main content. but to your question, the main information is the determining factor here.

its doesn't matter that poor english or grammer in your website will punish from google. goole just check whether the sites follow his rules or not if the site follow the google algorithm then definitely your site will rank up else not.

Based on what I gathered from the numerous discussions that I had read in this forum, good spelling matters to search engines even if only slightly. But the issue is not only for the SEO of the content but for the correctness that your readers will see. Isn’t it nice to have a well written content? I frown whenever I would read a post or comment in a forum with bad spelling much more if that is the content of a website that I am reading.
