If my Facebook status update is public, can anyone comment?

This might seem like an obvious question, but can just anyone see and comment on my Facebook status updates if they are set to public? I'm concerned over privacy issues.

Set your status updates to just friends or only friends in a certain Facebook list. That way only those people will see your updates, then only those people can comment.

If the status update is set to public, anyone in the world with a Facebook account (who is signed in) can see what you are posting.

You won't want to use the public setting as it might expose you or your family to risk, especially if you are publishing personally identifiable information such as home town/family photos with identifying landmarks etc.

If you're using your Facebook timeline to promote yourself in a professional capacity on a local basis, such as realtor or lawyer, then some of your posts might need to be public.

If you are using your own personal FB, and you would rather not have strangers looking at your personal information, you can set your personal settings for only friends to see your stuff.

You could create a separate FB account for your Freelance work. By doing this, you can keep everything public to attract future followers and clients. You can invite your friends and family to your new account, but have your personal information more geared toward your Freelance work, rather then your personal life.

If you're still worried about it coming up in the "People You May Know", you can hire someone to create your new FB account from another location, to avoid having your IP address picked up from FB.

The general public might be able to see what's on your Facebook page, if your posts are set to public, but I doubt they can actually comment. The two things are not related and you can actually control who is allowed to comment on your page. Just go to your Facebook privacy settings and make the adjustment.

You can decide with whom you want to share your status on Facebook. If you have set your status to be public then obviously everyone will be able to see and comment on it. As I stated above you can now choose with whom you want to share your post. I think Facebook is improving when it comes to security and privacy.

This is not me but my husband’s Facebook account. He has a lot of followers that his post gets a hundred likes in a day. He has 3 commenters who are not his friends. It’s really ironic because those 3 often like his posts and sometimes post relevant comments and mostly positive. But again, they are not my husband’s friends and no friend request either. He said that those 3 have been posting on his status for years now. Are they stalkers or what?
