Do you use a fake name on Facebook?

Facebook lets you change your name several times. But, many times i see fake names from users such as Kitty LuvsU (as the username) or some other made up name. And, you know that's not a real name. But these accounts are not terminated, even though fake names are clearly against Facebook TOS. Just wondering if you ever used a fake name on Facebook (such as a name that was not really yours). And, do you worry your account could be shut down over that?

i never use a facke name but i often change my name in a different style and with some adition in name .. but never used fake name..

That's still a fake name. Adding something on your name will make it different from your real name, so it's still fake in any way you look at it.

You are right that whatever style you use on your real name will be considered a fake name. Facebook users who reverse the spelling of their names are annoying and I see them as silly or downright stupid. But what the heck if they want to use any name. I don’t really care if they want to display their stupidity in social media. Even the profile pictures they use are crazy and senseless.

No, I haven't used. I think people should use their real names rather then using your fake accounts.

Using a real name helps establish trust with potential fans of your Facebook page. They can see that you're a real person and not hiding anything.

With a Facebook page, you are welcome to use a pseudonym to protect your privacy. Though this might not be the best option if you are trying to brand yourself online.

Some people create fake accounts with fake username to promote their page or website..
Also i have seen many usernames like " Facebook King", " Facebook's MLA" , " Facebook's Queen " and there is no problem with their accounts. Facebook bans someone when anyone reports user or creates account and starts adding anonymous people and posting links ..

I see that alot aswell Angie, especially from the younger ones on Facebook.#

I have friends that change theirs when they are pregnant and such to first name mummytobe last name, which I can never understand and then when the child is born they change it to first name mummy to baby name and their last name.

Really doesn't make sense to me alot of the time, people mention they are pregnant, post pictures up and then let the world know they have had the child yet still feel the need to overload their name with random stuff.

Using my real name on Facebook and forums as well as other sites (along with a consistent avatar) has helped me get gigs on SEOClerks. As you say, you build your reputation based on your real name. So it helps to be consistent from one site to the next, even on Facebook.

I think so long as you use at least part of your real name, then it's OK to do. Though I don't think shutting down fake name accounts are a big priority for Facebook.

Using a real first and last name might make you a target of someone who doesn't like you as they could easily find you at any time on Facebook. Changing even your last name on Facebook will protect you from privacy intrusions.

Can't you adjust your privacy settings so others can't search for you by email or contact you if not on your friend list? This would provide some protection from stalkers.

That's a very good point. When you obscure your real identity, you have less of a chance of being found by long lost relatives and friends on Facebook whom you might have lost contact with some years before.

Using a fake name on Facebook is useless for two reasons. If you are using the fake name on your personal timeline, then distant relatives searching on Facebook won't be able to find you. And, if you are associating your fake name with your business page, then your customers will only ever get to know you as that name and not as your professional business name.

In real life friends and family are more important than Facebook contacts and friends anyway. No need to rely on Facebook to keep you connected to people you see everyday.

I don't like the idea of using fake names or being fake on Facebook as it can lead to many misunderstandings, especially if friend someone there and they become more than a friend. Eventually the other person will want to know the real you and will be hurt that you didn't share your real name up front.

There could be good reasons to hide your identity and bad reasons too. If someone is worried about stalkers, they might not want to use a full first and last name on Facebook as that type of information could be used along with your known location to find you in a small city. For that reason some people decide not to be public about their real name. A bad reason not to use a full name is when you are hiding a secret life from your real family and impersonating someone else on Facebook.

As my Facebook account is only used for personal reasons, I see no reason to have anything fake on it. I can just as easily restrict who is only friends list to people that I know, so I'm not afraid of being stalked by anyone.

Most internet marketers try to create a recognizable brand/image online which usually includes their real name (or nickname) as well as a photo that customers will instantly recognize. This can even be done on Facebook.

I had to Google this one to find out for sure but came up with this information from Facebook's official TOS page.

Registration and Account Security

Facebook users provide their real names and information, and we need your help to keep it that way. Here are some commitments you make to us relating to registering and maintaining the security of your account:
  1. You will not provide any false personal information on Facebook, or create an account for anyone other than yourself without permission.
  2. You will not create more than one personal account.

Source: Facebook TOS section 4, subsection 2

Maybe there are legitimate reasons to start a secondary Facebook account such as your first one was hacked or can no longer be accessed. However, it seems they don't want one person having multiple accounts. Though I realize it's common practice for many in internet marketing to have numerous Facebook and other related social accounts.

Facebook will look the other way if they are making money from an account though. My account name is obviously fake, as it's the name of an animal joke, but they have my real name when I buy FB ads and it doesn't seem to bother them that the names don't match...

For a business related Facebook account, I can see the logic in using a fake 'real person' name that matches your image rather than the actual name which can be linked back to your real life.

Users such as Kitty LuvsU might have been created way back the Facebook policy. Fake names are intended for fake accounts. Fake accounts intended to to bad stuff online like sending spams or misleading information. Some consider Facebook Real-name Policy as invading privacy. Is raises questions around identity and the right to self-determination on social media. Some or most users are still grasping for some semblance of privacy. So for safety reasons they use fake names.

So maybe that is a far fetched hypothetical, but its not unreasonable to think it could happen. At least one of your friends will not recognize you anymore f you change your name to something fake on Facebook.

Too many chances for someone from your past to just track you down even when you don't want that. It's what I don't like about Facebook and social media, all that invasion of privacy. Way beyond creepy.

It's best to use your real name on your Facebook timeline and profile so your friends can feel bonded to you.

Then again, if you are posting as a page, it might be OK to post as a fake name.

For instance, if your page is about sports memes, you could post as BestFunnyMemes or some made up name, as that would be the name of your page.

Then your fans would always know that you are representing that page, where as they might struggle to know who you are when posting as your real name.

The same way for me. I am Beverly but also Bev, and for me that's the same name as one is just shortened version of the other. Most people call me Beverly in a professional/work environment but to my family, I've always been Bev. So if I use that name on a social networking site, I don't consider it to be using a fake name as it is my name and always was, just a shortened version of it. It's not like making up something completely unrelated to my real name.

I'm using a pseudonym on a couple of my Facebook accounts and I've heard that most fake named accounts are being taken down by Facebook but there's a way of using a pseudonym or username that is allowable by Facebook. In some accounts I use my nickname and in some I use a pseudonym. And in my experience the accounts where I use a pseudonym and doesn't have my real pic on it gets deleted every 12 months. Even if it's not reported. Facebook knows which are legit and which are fake ones, and they do a thorough cleaning of accounts on a yearly basis. If you don't want your account to be taken down use your real pic as your profile pic on an account which uses a pseudonym or a nickname and still would be considered a legit account. Not using your true photo will label your account as a fake one.
