Why does it automatically make me follow friends?

Now whenever I add a friend, I am following them. And, though I want those people in my Facebook friends list, I am not really sure I want to follow every little status update they are making as it's over whelming my news feed. Is there some way to make it so that every friend added is not automatically being followed?
