How does bounce rates affect our sites?

One of my sites have a 50% bounce rate, while the other one have 15%. How does bounce rates affect our sites?

Search engines like google and bing doesn't like bounce rates at all. They search for quality contents and pages.... The more are the bounce rates the less are the chances get indexing fast.... If you are having site with unique and quality contents hire a seo expert for one time service to help you.... your website urls should also be search engine friendly to make it indexed fast...

If you bounce rate is 75% or higher then you are more then likely being penalized for it.

Do you mean to say that your website can be penalized simply by the high bounce rate? My understanding with a high bounce rate means the user or the visitor did not stay long on a particular web page hence it gives an impression that the web page is not good enough. However, I have a question on this subject. How does the search engine detect the bounce rate of a website?
