Why is there a 15 minute video limit on Youtube?

I would like to submit videos to Youtube without needing to confirm my account. Why do they impose a 15 minute limit on videos for Youtube?

Youtube is just giving you incentive to sign up for Youtube (or sign in) with your Google username. Without this sign up process, they don't have the legal right to mail you. By signing in, Youtube is able to email you later, even after you leave the site.

One of the best reasons to sign into Google with your account when you use Youtube and confirm your account is how they let you upload very long videos, even an hour or more. Otherwise they put a hold on your longer uploads until you are able to confirm the account. And, then you never get to share those longer videos.

The average length of a Youtube video is around three minutes. So you would likely never need to create or upload a fifteen plus minute video. That option is just for those who are live streaming such as with presentations, meetings or games.

I would suggest that you simply provide your phone number to Youtube so they can verify your account. But you might not have a phone where you can be texted at. And, if that is the situation you can't get a verified account that would let you upload longer videos.

Obviously, the limited running time of videos is in consonance with the storage requirements. How big is a 10 minute video, how much storage does it occupy? And if there is a 100-minute video that is uploaded, you can imagine the vast storage needed for that. After the storage, the internet access is the next issue. Of course, the longer the video, the longer the time needed to download it for viewing. For me, the 15-minute maximum duration for the video is just practical.
