Do a lot of brainstorming on the domain name you want. Think about branding possibilities, such as whether or not you can have a log designed which will match your domain name. And, do you want a keyword rich domain or something that is easy to remember? Don't fall victim to the cheap domain trap, where you buy lots of domains for a dollar each and then try to find the time/energy to turn the sites into something good. That's more related to the creative, rather than technical side of buying a domain but still important to consider.

I think the most important thing is to consider the price of the domain extension, especially the renewal prices. A lot of the new TLDs cost significantly more than .com .org .net .ca, and aren't as good.

The first thing you should consider is what is your purpose of registering the domain. Are you registering a domain because you want to sell it later? In that case, you need to think about one or two word domain that is brandable. You should also have keyword based domain. If you are registering because you want a website, you need to use a word/s that describe/s your niche. For instance if your website will have articles on business, finance, investment, forex, trading, business hacks can be a good name. IF the name is already taken you can play around the words for example investment hacks, business 101 etc.
