phpBB Review - What are your thoughts?

Phpbb is a pretty decent free forum software. The main advantages with it is that it is free and provides everything you need to start your own forum. With its version 3.1 update, they renamed their addons from modifications to extensions. It wasn’t just a rename though, Phpbb also made it a lot more user friendly for people to install. However, this comes to a disadvantage which is the lack of addons and it being a free software doesn’t help because there are less developers who work on addons if you compare it to other softwares like Xenforo. Phpbb has everything you need but it lacks extra features. In terms of SEO, it also isn’t as good as other softwares like Xenforo; they don’t even have many SEO addons and still don’t have SEO friendly URLs.

They don’t have a complete suite like IPB although it may be unfair trying to compare a free forum software with a paid one. I used Phpbb for a long time and I like it but if you want to offer something unique on your forum, a paid forum software will probably be more cost effective but this is a very good option if you want to start a new forum and lack funds.

I have never really owned a phpBB forum, only installed it and then briefly worked with the software for a short time. Mostly, my experience with free forum software is limited to SMF, as I used that on my forum for at least 4 years. I was a moderator and admin for awhile on a phpBB forum. I didn't like the moderation controls as much as Xenforo (paid forum software) or even SMF. I don't think that I would install this software for longterm use, unless someone can come up with a compelling reason to do so.
