Would mention alerts be beneficial for the community discussion?

We get alerts for replies, and just about everything else via the community discussion. However, if someone posted on the community discussion and mentioned you, you won't see an alert for that. You will have no way of knowing they mentioned you in their post unless you were to actually go to that post.

What would you think about mention "alerts"?

If you are unaware of what those are, think in terms of Twitter. You'll be notified when someone mentions you in a tweet. It will show up as an alert via Twitter. What if that would occur on the community discussion.

Do you think it would be beneficial?

Let me provide one more example, just incase it's hard for others to understand this specific discussion.

Using an "@" sign we can say use "@everett", or basically any symbol. Once the symbol is used, it would create an alert for the user "Everett".

Yes that would be a good idea, I agree with you. I just went through this a couple of days ago. There was a person who contacted me regarding a service she needed, and in the message she sent she mentioned that someone else had recommended me to her, but did not remember who. About a week later I was going through discussions and noticed that in one particular discussion someone had in fact recommended me to this person who had then sent me the message, and so I took the time to thank this person of course. It would have been nice to know and if there had been mention alerts.

I guess it would be beneficial, same as we had on old forum, so we could actually know if someone just mentioning us, or there may be metion call to answer specific question by mentioned user... I support this idea.

I really never paid attention to the forum, and wasn't even aware that mentioning a user would actually prompt an alert on the old forum. I guess its a feature that was present, that got removed and forgotten.

I would definitely want such a feature! Even though the Community Discussion is different compared to the old forum, there might still be people who mention you directly with questions or are referring to you in some other ways. You should be aware of those situations so I want this feature to be added. Just like it alerted you in the old forum would be perfect here too.

i just got to thinking, wouldn't quotes allow for an alert, if you mentioned a quote..? Then I got to thinking, if you reply, it doesn't alert the user if they used your message in quote. How about a feature like that for quotes? I'm not sure if it would be useful, as it's not that often that a user will actually quote someone.

If it was already available in the old forum, then I'm hoping it can be added to the discussions in the near future.. because we really need this. Sometimes I think users think i am ignoring when it's definitely not the case!

This is a good suggestion! Firstly, you automatically subscribe to a question when you reply to it. However, I generally don't read all the other answers in full so I may miss people who tag me if there is no alerts to go with it. Therefore, I think this is a good idea. I don't think it should be high on the priority list though but definitely will be a nice addition and will benefit the quality of the discussions.

Finally, it is something that is commonly used on forums and this definitely gives the Community Discussions a greater community feel.

Yes, the more I think about the mention alerts the more I think it should be implemented. I am actually seeing a lot of posts where users are referencing me, but I'm just now seeing the posts days after the reference. I hope the admin can take this into consideration as it will have more impact on the Community Discussions, and we can continue chatting. By not having this feature, a lot of discussions simply become inactive discussions because if you're trying to quote someone, and the person you're quoting isn't notified, then how can that person respond? They would have to skim all the posts and look for where they are referenced, it's time consuming and not many will do this. Would mention alerts be beneficial for the community discussion?
