Freelancers: Describe your working environment

What do you typically have near you? Do you often have a mug of coffee, or tea? Perhaps a bottle of water? Maybe a television in front of you to catch the latest news, or perhaps the game? An iPod, or music app on with your mobile phone? Can you describe your working environment? How do these objects make you perform better when working online?

Yes, that is right. A HUGE coffee mug at all times is indeed a must.

Freelancers: Describe your working environment

I set up my work space to be as efficient as possible but more importantly it is comfortable which is a productivity booster for me. All sources of distractions have been eliminated except phone.

My working environment: My desk is 8 feet by 4 feet, I have 4 high end PC's with two big monitors, 6 - 1 terabyte external hard drives for extra storage, a calculator, computer speakers with sub woofer, plantronics headphones with mic for my voip telephone, always have coffee on hand, bottled water, a scented candle (currently lavender), pens, legal note pads and a small am fm weather radio.

My server room: I keep the servers away from my work space because they are super loud, like jet engines. I am currently running two rack servers networked with both WiFi and LAN lines with a managed switch. The server room also is running 2-4 additional high end PC's depending on what is needed. All computers are networked to both a black and white printer and a 4 drum color printer also located in my server room.

I normally eliminate distractions too such as the TV, ipod, house phone. It irks me when I'm trying to get things done and keep hearing the phone ring, or notifications from apps, or even commericals from the TV.

4 computers?! Wow, you are a very serious, Web guy! I ohnly have 2 computers, a desktop and a laptop. I am on both at times, but usually I like the desktop more since it doesn't over heat too often.

I'm amazed at your setup, is this your house or a building where you work? I'd be pretty amazed if this was a house. Care to explain more? It's so interesting!

I like to have as little stuff as possible as I am a person who prefers a clean layout. So I only keep my mobile phone and a bottle of water next to me, and a notebook and pen. Other than that I prefer a clear table. From time to time I make a cup of coffee but that's about it. What is most important about my working environment is that if possible I want peace and quiet so as to be able and concentrate more. But unfortunately that is not always possible with my kids. I always managed though somehow Freelancers: Describe your working environment

A notebook and pen. Do you write articles on paper before transferring them to websites? If so, I have never heard of any writers doing this. Usually they use MS Word, or even Notepad to write down ideas, and make drafts. Very interesting when using an old notebook.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

EliteWriter
No I write articles right away in MS Word, I keep a notebook and pen to make notes, such as:
  • which orders I am going to do on that day,
  • or for instance, when I receive a new order, I check this notebook, make a note as to when I will probably be able to see to it, and inform the buyer accordingly.
  • and also to keep a note when an important order is going to expire, so that i make sure to remember and see to it by that date.

It is just for notes and memos you see.

The suggestion for order notes would probably work out for you if it is ever implemented. I hope it is, as this would seem to help both buyers and sellers.

Hi Everett thanks for your nice question. And I have all things which you mentioned as example. My office not much big and not too tiny. But, I setup almost all of your mentioned things or object in my moderate office. Beside, my office has a tea stall and I can just bring a cup of tea or coffee just by one phone call. And in front of me have a TV and mostly I watching TV for watching news. And near to my hand I always preserve a bottle of water and sure it is very necessary when you fell thirsty after doing mass work. And I also like to listen music with mild sound, and I have 2 micro lab sound system. Though usually I listen to music within coffee break.

Simply I can say my office quiet and prim. I setup all necessary object for avoiding boringness within work

Well... Let's see.. *Looks around*

I have, first of all, 2 monitors in front of me. One energy drink to the left, in front of the second screen, a bunch of papers (notes and bills) and a couple of pencils. All those things are to my left. In front of my second screen. On my right side, to the right of the main screen, I have my cellphone, throat lozenges? and a towel actually.

I usually have Skype, a few websites and a .txt document on my second screen. And at the time I write this, I have this message box in front of me, on my main screen.

The things I have here, is what I always have. Except for the towel. Don't ask me why it's here.. I have no idea. Freelancers: Describe your working environment

We have a double story house.. the bottom half is our living area and we have small kids... so it is messy, sticky and very well lived in!

The top story is my office. It is open plan with a balcony overlooking our living room and kitchen, with stairs going down. There is a big room upstairs with my big, old fashioned, heavy, wooden desk. My desk is in front of one of the windows which overlooks the sea, and there is a door and a balcony too so I can sit outside too looking at the sea but it is often windy and cold, especially now it is winter!

I have a bathroom off my office which is handy. I have some book cases and a little desk next to mine for my 4 year old daughter to draw at when my 2 year old son is sleeping and I want to get a little more work done.

Freelancers: Describe your working environment
It is what I call perfect!

I can't really see the picture but from what I can see it does look nice. Freelancers: Describe your working environment

The house I live in is a 2 story house as well, we don't really call it a double story, just a 2 story. The downstairs living room area, or behind it is my office. It's quite small, like 3 feet by 8 feet but it currently seems to work. It's really bright, and I guess comfortable. It's right across from the coffee pot, and the TV so it's good to be near those. Sometimes I like to listen to music on the TV. I listen to a channel called MC soundscapes, you should check it out. Freelancers: Describe your working environment

It is beautiful, yes not a great pic I agree but what you see outside is a few low bushes in front of our house and then the ocean. We have a little path through those bushes onto the beach. It is much closer than it looks to the water. It is so soothing to be able to see and hear the ocean while you are working!

I do need a coffee station upstairs though so I don't have to run downstairs for a top up. I have a little coffee machine that my hubby bought me and I use it occasionally. I think I should put that on my to do list to take upstairs and use it daily!

Are you sure you want to do this? I mean it could create a huge addiction! I know I have a MASSIVE coffee addiction. I HAVE to have coffee, and at least one mug a day.. sometimes more.. it's insane. I've been trying to cut back a lot, and i start to get headaches. :/

Oh that's nice, a very good setting. I basically have to stay in the kitchen/living area as I do not have room for an office. It is often noisy with the rest of the family, but I am able to access the kettle to prepare coffee or have a snack whenever I want. I have a very big door leading to a back terrace actually, but I rarely go there to work to be honest. The reason is that I actually prefer shutting down the blinds especially when I am alone as I seem to concentrate more than if there were to be bright light.

Well when I moved into my new place I bought a really nice glass L shaped desk that fit perfectly in a section of my basement that was ideal for an office. So I set up the desk, set up my internet (router, modem, etc.) and when I sit down to work... I have no signal Freelancers: Describe your working environment Now normally this wouldn't be a problem because I could just hardwire, right? Well my router and modem was upstairs next to my TV because it's one of those fancy smart TVs. Now I could just drill a hole in the floor and run a cable down there so I could just hard wire in, but I rent so that's not an option Freelancers: Describe your working environment

My work environment now is upstairs sitting in my living room while I try not to watch TV or get drawn in to play video games on my PS3 or PS4. I also have 3 cats and a dog that annoy the shit out of me on an hourly basis because they want to cuddle or just lay at my feet lol. Well, my dog just sleeps on his bed, but he annoys me when he needs to go out so I understand that. My cats get annoying because whenever I sit back to relax for a few minutes it's like an invitation to annoy me and try to cuddle Freelancers: Describe your working environment Usually I'll have my TV on in the background so that it's not quiet all the time. It usually backfires if I'm watching Comedy Central though Freelancers: Describe your working environment

Ah! This has happened to me, well sort of. When we got a bundling plan, I thought the modem would be downstairs you know.. like near the main television but the guy I live with decided to put it in his room.. and I didn't have internet, and the only reason we bundled the service was to get internet. My previous internet was through a Wifi connection off of someone elses internet. I wasn't stealing, as I had permission but it always went out on me. So I had to eventually buy a wireless adapter that plugs into the USB port of my machine. You may just need to get a wireless adapter? I know it's slower through wifi, but it would work.

If I work in school, I have computers around me and other people too. In the library, their is books around me and other people too. This makes it easy to work because the environment is serious and friendly. I also carry water with me.

At home, there is music playing in the background ,a cup of milk and TV sometimes.

I work from my study, so the place is very conducive to me.My kids the study is no area for noise, so they hardly come area that area of the house.I always have my device for musicals on to enjoy my slow music depending on my mood, then I have my water or juice depending on what I'm craving for and workflow is on.

My official workplace is the computer table in the corner of our living room. It has the good old desktop running on Windows XP which still serves me well. My position is facing the tv so I can also watch the tv when I feel like it. But we also have a laptop that I usually use in the terrace depending on my mood and the time of day. It’s nice to work in the terrace in the late afternoon when it is cool and quiet unlike in the morning when there are passersby. This is not to brag but I feel like I have an ideal working place and environment because I can demand everyone to give me peace and silence.
