Holiday seasons are very popular and you should have marketing plans for them.

The following resources might be useful

http://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/

You should start planning for each holiday at LEAST 3 Months prior to it starting

Very popular, obviously since everybody are buying gifts and costumes. You missed halloween but Christmas is near by. And thanksgiving before that, so don't miss black friday and cyber monday deals

Keep in mind that most countries and regions have their own specific holidays celebrated there, maybe in addition to the big holidays we all know about. And, some holidays we might take for granted, such as Christmas are not really celebrated at all in other cultures or countries. You should know your market well before targeting your shopping demographic to ensure they also celebrate the holidays you are targeting.

The only drawback of such websites featuring content on seasonal topics is they do not receive traffic around the year. They receive traffic only during the holidays. However, with few tweaks, you can easily draw traffic to your website featuring contents on seasonal topics. Instead of focusing only on one topic, for instance, Christmas, Halloween etc, you have to feature various holidays and spread the topic. You will feature New Year in January, Valentine's Day in February, Spring in March, Easter in April and likewise. You will get traffic through out the year.

In my personal survey of the discussions in one forum, the most popular topics are those pertaining to Halloween and Valentine’s day. Christmas falls on the number 3 position in terms of popularity. However, you have to take note that holidays are seasonal so if your niche is Christmas or Halloween, your website will be abuzz during the season and maybe stagnate after the season. You have to take that in consideration unless you are creative enough to create discussions during off season.
